Doesn’t rank with with his first albums, but definitely worth a listen
It helps to remember, going into this, that this album is nearly 50 years old. It’s funny – actually has some laugh-out-loud moments – but most of the routines are so dated they almost totally lose their punch. When this album was released, Newhart had just completed a short-lived and unsuccessful attempt at a TV show, and was returning to comedy. Despite getting killed in the TV market, Newhart here sounds poised and confident ... which is actually kind of the problem: the nervous “I’m-not-even-sure-I-should-be-doing-this” schtick worked well with his act, and it’s missing here, by and large. His TV experience did hand him material for a couple new bits: “Reflections on TV Commercials” and “Amateur Show Contestants” both have funny moments ... but I’m sure they were much funnier back when there was real-world context. Same with “Nudist Camp Expose” and even the now semi-classic “The Man Who Looked Like Hitler.” Probably the best bit on the album isn’t really a “bit” at all: “The Expectant Father,” concerning the birth of his first child, provides a rare-but-welcome glimpse beyond Newhart’s on-stage persona into his day-to-day life. Overall, “Faces Bob Newhart” is worth a listen, but it doesn’t rank with with his first albums. By-passing his earlier nervous/uncomfortable take on things makes him sound more confident as a performer ... it just doesn’t go with the material and leaves the whole thing feeling ... well, nervous and uncomfortable. How’s that for irony? $.02 contributed.

Great eye-candy, very little meat.
Beautiful, fun to look at, a great resource ... at least visually. I, for one, would have preferred more content, more of the information BEHIND the logos ... but this isn’t the book for that. Great eye-candy, very little meat. Oh, and smaller than I was anticipating, but that could just be me. $.02 contributed.
