Girls just wanna have fun...and fun it what you get!!
1985. Madonna ruled the world with "Like A Virgin" & "Crazy For You". Michael J. Fox charmed us in "Back To The Future" and we all fell in love with "The Goonies". 3 years earlier we met Sarah Jessica Parker on the short lived series "Square Pegs". Prettier and sexier here- SJP wrapped us around her finger in "G.J.W.H.F.". Janie is your typical teenager. Full of awkwardness & wanting to experience life outside her comfortable family home life. This movie is not by any means meant for the Oscars or any high end award show for that matter. It was not intended for that audience. It was meant for 12 - 17 yrs olds in 1985. Fun, silly, Mtv style look & feel, hot girls and one very, VERY sexy & sweaty guy!! This is a popcorn movie if there ever was one. Sit back and get lost in the silliness. No deep thinking required. Sarah is quite a dancer in her own right and in this gem she is top notch. Though a dancer double may have been used in some scenes. Still- you don't care!! It's all fun! Helen Hunt was actually cute and enjoyable in this film. This was when she was tolerable and before she became a rigid and UN-FUNNY sitcom character and and a VERY undeserving Oscar winner. I can barely say that without feeling ill. But I digress. A very cute and charming character is played by former teen idol Shannen Doherty. She is the younger sister of Jeff (Lee Montgomery) who falls for Janie (SJP). Shannen is like a sundae on a hot summer day. Sweet, cool and makes you happy you showed up!! It's pretty cool to see SJP, Helen & Shannen together in this movie and then think of where they are were headed in a few short years. Amazing! And this film has all 3!! Now, let's talk about Jeff. Sexy, adorable, moody, sweaty Jeff. Total eye candy folks. Yes, he can act and he would have been good with the right sitcom but alas his career ended not long after this film. By his choice if the stories on the net are true. Anyway- Jeff & Janie are pure magic together. The all american boy & girl next door couple. The chemsitry between Lee & SJP is clear and they were the perfect casting choices. You root for them from the beginning. Other characters that round out this film are Janie's military minded father, typical suburban mother, bratty yet cute little brother, Jeff's factory working father, the bitchy spoiled rich girl who tries everything she can to stop Jeff & Janie's success (she barely act though!!) and the money driven-goofy best friend of Jeff played by a young Jonathan Silverman. Jonathan became quite the fetching leading sitcom man in the 90's on "Friends" and his own series- "The Single Guy". If you are looking for an hour and half of fluff, silliness and great 80's fun- then look no further!! I was obessed with this movie growing up. Tried so hard to emulate the dancing. Wanted Jeff to come and be my dance parter!! Truly this film is just fun. A musical highlight is the song "Dancing In Heaven (Orbital Be-Bop)" by Q-Feel. The soundtrack has become a real rarity and sells for quite high prices on ebay last I saw. Let Sarah Jessica, Shannen, Lee, Jonathan & even Helen take you away for some FUN!!

Kicks: Could have used some...
I bought this movie on ebay solely because I am a huge Shelley Hack fan. Granted, she will never be revered for her acting abilities. That's not why I am a fan. Certainly she can act but it is her beauty, style and presence that draws me in. Kate Jackson may have been the better actress but Shelley was the far more beautiful. This uneven and at times monotonous little film (a direct to video I believe) does have it's moments of action and tension. But they are muddled down by poor direction and script. Anthony Geary's character is meant to be (and in several scenes shown to be) quite evil and heartless. But he does not have the charisma nor acting prowess to capably pull it off. Easily hired due only to his fame on tv's General Hospital. Who cares. Shelley's character is so all over the place. She is suppose to be a strong, risk seeking diva but later on in the film certain action scenes show her to be anything but. She is strong. No wait, she is weak, No wait she is a complete victim. This is not Shelley's fault but the fault of the writers and director. How is she on any level suppose to be a counterpart to Anthony's character? Not one bit believeable. She pets seemingly angry and vicious dogs (who turned out to be anything but). He acts like his sports car is dead in the worst part of town and is attacked. Only he turns the tables around and attacks the attackers. Knives are pulled, fists are thrown. Not exactly equal. Later on the uneven-ness shows up again when she makes him breakfast and a deadly cobra is involved. Again, a poor script & and poor direction really take the wind out of the sails on this one. I kept envisioning this to be a early cousin to Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Not that I enjoyed that clunker but the action was tight and crisp. Script was mostly top notch. And the director knew what the hell he was doing. On a purely cosmetic point- Shelley. Oh sweet Shelley. Who convinced you to cut your hair into that horrible bob style?!! NOT flattering my love. Take it from a gay man- NOT flattering. I love ya, hon. Just not the hair in this one. This rare and lost gem is purely for DIE-HARD Shelley Hack or Anthony Geary fans. Anyone less will be let down. One interesting connection to this film- Shelley and co-star Tom Mason would again co-star a year later in the short lived "sophisticated" dramedy "Jack & Mike" on ABC. Let's hope that was a better deal. No matter how long it was or wasn't around.

Life Goes On...maybe not so much.
A ridiculously cheesy, thin and poorly produced album by a one time D-List teen idol Tommy Puett. He co-starred on ABC's Life Goes On tv series in the late 80's - early 90's. His California surfer looks and killer smile made him a teen magazine staple for a few years. Espesically popular were his shirtless posters. His acting abilities were not going to make him the next Michael J. Fox and his singing abilities were definitely not going to make him the next David Cassidy. Tommy's voice is sincere and loaded with eager effort but in the end fails to hold any strength or prowess. The music over clouds his vocals many times and this is a tool priducers use when the alleged singer cannot sustain themselves. See 99% of all recordings by LaToya Jackson. The song choices are the real sin here though. To call them throwaway pop trash is being too kind. The lyrics, the production- everything suffers from lack of true talent on other side of the microphone. Now I did buy this CD as there are a few songs that as cheesy as they are take me back to a more innocent time in my own life. "Kiss You All Over" & "Heartattack" still get my toes a-tappin I must admit. But they are still ridiculous attempts at pop/dance. Blatantly the record label wanted to somehow capture a bit of the teen audiences that were listening to New Kids On The Block, Tommy Page and even Tiffany or Debbie Gibson. This album makes all 4 acts seem like musical geniuses in comparison. As sexy and sweet as Tommy Puett may have been on camera- he was flat and tasteless behind the microphone.
