A look in the mind of a great composer of the 20th cen.
Like his music, Frank Zappa's life was complex, full of humor and tragedy. Critics and fans alike often failed to recognize the genius of Zappa as a serious composer of very complex melodies and rhythms. Musicians who have seriously attempted his work know better.
Frank was a workaholic who composed and recorded up to 16 hours a day for nearly 40 years. He has more copywrites registered in the Library of Congress than any other composer, and many more recordings which haven't been heard than have.
He was against any drug use, except cigarettes and coffee - a view other musicians around him didn't share. A story I heard was that, in the late sixties, everyone from Neil Young, to Paul McCartney, to the Monkees would come to Frank and Gail Zappa's house to party. But they'd better get high in their cars first, because Frank would throw them out the door if they brought it in the house.
Frank was also a champion for treating musicians and creative music fairly, and he was an arch opponent of censorship.
A very enjoyable and fascinating read by an eloquent man who passed too soon.

Excellent source of ideas for the modern composer who understands theory.
I have been a jazz composer for 20+ years, and some of my recordings have been used on TV and movies. I want to expand my writing, arranging, and orchestration techniques to include more classical, rock, and modern ideas. This book is full of tried and true ideas from the last 400 years. Clearly written and easy to understand, provided you already have a background in reading music, basic keyboard, and basic music theory.
I found this book at the local library and was so impressed I decided to buy it for my own.
