ART Pro Audio Tube Opto 8 Channel Mic Pre With ADAT I/O - 1 Only
    13 February 2017
    Art QA is a joke
Art presents the prosumer and pro markets a dilemma. When the gear works it sounds fantastic and is incredible value for money. Problem is that it only works some of the time. Doubly confusing is that it will work in one persons setup but then not in another. I have owned two pro channel IIs, a pro vla II, a mpa II and an Octopre which is the subject of this review. When I bought my pro channels and connected them to my RME UFX I got a terrible buzzing sound, even when nothing else was connected to the UFX but the pro channels. Now when I connected the same preamps to my focusrite 18i20 low and behold works perfectly. Try explaining that to the idiot sales person that sold you the gear in the first place or even art themselves. I quote "we have never heard of this problem before". Just try telling that to the multitude of complaints on gearslutz thom. Yet I digress, which brings me to the octopre. I'll just start out with this, I connected the device precisely as instructed by the manual, I have many years experience with such devices and I had hardware and software sync locked. When running up the octopre channels 1,3,5,7 exhibited extreme distortion. Channels 2,4,6 and 8 were perfect.. The channels that worked sounded fantastic, warm, articulate, shimmery, glossy, just great. Despite being staved plate these pres sound as pro as my high end gear. Truly great value, except for the fact that channels 1,3,5,7 didn't work. Coincidence that the odd numbers didn't work and the even ones did? I think not yet I am no electronic engineer so I cannot in good conscience comment with authority. So I send it back to Turramurra Music. Tim was very understanding and gives me a full refund. Then I get a border line abusive email from josh, head of online sales. My guess is josh has coped quite the earful for sending out defective gear. Josh says he ran it up and it works perfectly and, to summarise, I am a useless git that doesn't know a keyboard from a guitar. It's called a key tar josh geez. Still I digress further. Anyhow, as with all art products, whilst their designs are gear their components are not which inevitably leads us to that very scary term "intermittent ". So the octopre, like the pro channels, only like to play with some toys in the audio sandpit and not others. Personally I have waisted too much of my life chasing up defective art products and can't be bothered anymore. They're a bit like being with a super hot but abusive spouse. Sure the sex is crazy good but you can only take getting kicked in the balls so many times.
