The Gossip - Standing In The Way Of Control
A very good album, that has a lot more going for it than just the mighty title track. Ten strong tracks and no filler add up to a gem of an album. Beth Ditto, if you can put her appeareances in the media to one side, has an excellent voice and puts the likes of Duffy and Adele to shame. Well worth a listen, and buying if you can.

The King Of Comedy
The King Of Comedy is an under-rated classic that may possibly be the finest film made by Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro. It's the story of a delusional aspiring comedian by the name of Rupert Pupkin, excellently played by De Niro, and his obsession with making it big by appearing on The Jerry Langford Show. Jerry Lewis is also excellent as talk show host Langford, with Sandra Bernhard also outstanding as a demented fan of Langford's. The King Of Comedy was a massive flop upon its original release in 1983, but has come to be seen more favourably in recent years. I can't think of a better film about the lure and dangers of fame. It seems ever more relevant in our current fame- obsessed culture, where people can become famous/notorious by doing very little and/or with little or no talent. In many ways, The King Of Comedy is a more disturbing film than Scorsese's Taxi Driver and Rupert Pupkin is fare more frightening than Travis Bickle could ever be. I have loved this film since I first saw it in the mid 1990s, and when I saw a copy going cheap on ebay I bid on it and luckily won. The print is good, and there are some good extras on the DVD, including a short documentary about the film. Highly recommended, and remember it's better to be king for a night than schmuck for a lifetime.

The Child (DVD)
An offbeat gem from the Seventies, The Child is a low budget horror film that is worthy of your attention. Its the tale of a rather disturbed young girl who is 'friends' with zombies, and her attempt to use the living dead to get revenge for her mother's death. When a young woman arrives to look after her, things eventually come to a head with some surprisingly effective looking zombies on the loose. Though not overly bloody, but with the odd violent moment, The Child gets over on atmosphere, and by being generally creepy throughout. It's not a film for all tastes, and some of the acting is a bit on the overdone side, but fans of Seventies exploitation cinema and horror films should enjoy it. It's a film that I had wanted to see for some time, and was lucky enough to purchase on ebay. The DVD also has some interesting extras, including the very effective original trailer for the film.
