An excellent book on a very important topic. HIghly recommended.
This book is an excellent study of a crucial and often neglected period of the Great War. Following the collapse of the German spring and summer offensives in France, the Allies went over to the offensive themselves, using all the skills and tactics they had learned in four brutal years of trench warfare. They captured more German-occupied territory in three months than they had in the previous three years combined. And The BEF produced one of the most significant victories in British military history. Had the Germans not offered an armistice, there is little doubt that their army would have collapsed, and the Allies driven them out of France.
Harris and Barr are noted scholars of the period, their research is thorough and extensive, and they have written an excellent study of an absolutely crucial period of World War I - and a period which, despite its immense significance to the outcome of the war, is virtually unknown even to serious students of the conflict.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of the First World War or the British Army.
