A poor performer in both receive and transmit!
0 of 3 found this helpful I have a Baofeng UV-5RE Plus that I bought about two years ago, and I really like it, so my review is based on my comparison between it and this new one. In short - the 2017 Baofeng with the Misuta chip set is about half the transceiver that the UV-5RE is. The UV-5R is weak on receive. Side by side, it won't pick up the local NOAA weather station and the UV-5RE does. The UV-5R transmitter hits my local repeater with about half noise where as my UV-5RE hits it with full quieting. And the new display is unreadable in low light situations. I cannot recommend this radio to anyone.

Not for beginners without a course instructor
Rating explanation: One star because contrary to the book title, it is not for beginners, at least not without being in an instructor led course. This book may be great for a continuing course in DEs. The student solution manual leaves something to be desired, but if you can find the instructor's solution manual, you can get all the answers for checking your work. It does not contain any worked out problems, just answers.
I am about 1/3 of the way through chapter 2, and one thing I am finding consistent concerning the exercise sets is that the problems are much more difficult than "a first course" should have - at least for a self-learner like myself. I've done some work out of Boyce's Elementary DEs, 6th ed., and I am finding that it is much better suited for self-study, especially if you get the matching student's solutions manual. Another advantage of the Boyce 6th ed. text is that it is exactly what Sal Khan uses for his DE course on the khanacademy site. If you have completed differential and integral calculus, I recommend the Khan Academy course; it's free, and Sal really does a good job.

A great atlas for more than just double stars!
The star charts are significantly larger than in Cambridge's Star Atlas, and the maps show all the same DSOs. Some have complained that the new edition does not contain optical doubles. I am not sure why that would be a negative. I think most people study true doubles because people are looking for all the physical attributes that bind a multiple star system together. I am very glad this atlas contains only targets that are true double.
Lastly, this atlas is a great companion to Cambridge's star atlas, and as always, Wil Tirion's charts are a delight.
