Parent Monitor Problem

I cannot get the parent monitor to interface with our baby monitor. I am following the instructions. We are not using the baby monitor that came with this parent monitor because we already have a baby and parent monitor of this make and model. We really only needed the parent monitor and charger because ours was lost when our basement flooded.
