RAP-SB-180-UN7U RAM X-Grip Phone Holder with Lil Buddy Adhesive Dash Mount L6
05 August 2020
good product but adhesive failed in heat on pebbled surface
The mount and holder are solid and do exactly what they're designed to do. No problems there. It'd be nice if one could easily insert and extract the phone with a single hand, but the design correctly prioritizes the need for a tight grip over that convenience, and you can't knock the product for that. (I can get the phone out with one hand, though not exactly smoothly.) My disappointment is with the adhesive. I don't have too many good placement options in my car. The best choice, in terms of ergonomics and aesthetics, is to mount it on a vertical surface on the side of the center console. In addition to the vertical, the plastic is pebbled and slightly curved, so I knew it would take a very good adhesive to keep the mount in place with the phone in it. RAM's instructional video recommends letting the adhesive bond for 24 hours before adding weight to the mount and promises that it will then be very securely fastened, so I was hopeful. I followed those instructions, but within a week the mount fell off. I had it mounted where no direct sunlight reaches, but the heat was still too much for the adhesive to maintain the hold. This was Southern California in the summer, but not a particularly scorching day. I had the windows down, though; if you have the AC on all the time, you might get better results.
