Linn Sondek LP12 Turntable with SME 3009 Arm
15 December 2016
The single most overrated hifi component of all time
The LP12 is legendary, and like all good legends there's some myth with the magic. I've owned a few, with all the expected kit: the lingo's the Aro's , the Troikas the upgrades et al. I good quality bearing and a nicely cast platter are the good parts. The subchassis rings like a gong. The bizarre wooden armboard is loosely attached with tiny screws to be 'lossy' ie to help damp that ring. Recent LP12s have a proper subchassis the Keel, but at an astronomical price. While far better than the Rega 3s and Revolvers of this world, they are also more expensive to buy. The Heybrook TT2 is a better version of the same design and can be picked up for under £300. The Logic Datum about the same. Parts for the LP12 are plentiful but again at a price. Embarrassingly worshipped by the dealers and British hifi press in the 80s (who should all be ashamed of themselves), the fact is, £600 gets you into Oracle Delphi territory and a higher level of resolution and realism altogether. If a relative offers you their old one, take it ! Spending your own money ? Get an Oracle.

Cambridge Audio Mission Cyrus Two Integrated Stereo Amplifier
21 February 2018
Superb amps but will need a full service
In another league to the likes of the Pioneer A400 and Marantz pm40se. While those amps are good considering what they sell for s/h , the cyrus 1 and 2 are just good , full stop. Word of warning though, the high quality selector switches will be sulphided now and need dismantling and chemically cleaning (a spray of switch cleaner won't help one jot) and some of the electrolytics will also have seen better days. Cyrus 2 adds a bigger transformer, more wallop and a proper mc phono stage but essentially the 1 and 2 are the same circuit. Later models have tougher circuit tracks but are actually harder to fix as cyrus removed the bias adjustment. budget £90-100 for a cyrus 1 and £120 for a full service and you'll have a stunning amp for under £220. Bargain.
Heed Audio Quasar MKIII MM/MC Phono Stage (With Q-PSU Power Supply)

Sensational performance for a bargain price
Sensational performance for a screaming bargain price. Heed products are ridiculous value even with the recent price rises.
