Lean machine
There is something I find intrinsically attractive about Lean film's I think it is the cinematography, so lush and fine and so vast in scale. John Mills, playing a learning disabled adult, is exceptional, Sarah Miles compelling as the woman torn between a husband's dull comforts and a lover's fractured passion. The story, set during the first world war in Ireland, centres on the growing republican movement's clash with the British army. But for me it is the scenery which wins, the vast sandy bays plundered by huge waves as well as Sinn Fein. A genuinely epic film by the director who excels at them.
