The best smartphone available (for me)
Everybody's needs are different, so there's no such thing as the 'ultimate' smartphone, just the best choice for *you*. Well, for now - in a few months there'll be a new 'best', so you've just got to accept that and move on. Right now, the Galaxy S5 is the best device for me. Because I use it to remote control servers, I didn't want to go to a UHD screen - 1080p is enough pixels in a screen this size. Because I'm carrying it in a pocket a lot, a phablet is just too big. The increased real estate is actually very useful for me, but I can't make the size tradeoff - it's still a phone I'll have in my pocket maybe 60% of every day. I also need a phone with a replaceable battery and an SD card slot. I am a pretty heavy user who can go through a full charge in half a day, so having some spare batteries to swap in gives me confidence I won't run out of juice (and is far more convenient than portable chargers). And then there's the fact that the battery life will be halved by the time the device is 24 to 30 months old - without a replaceable battery you're guaranteeing your handset will be utterly useless in three to four years. The SD card just makes sense - it is far better value $/GB than buying it built into the handset, with the benefit of being able to yank it out with all your data intact if the phone fails for some reason. Internal storage has no such convenience. The SGS5 has an excellent camera capable of 4k recording. Now I readily accept that that's a bit of a gimmick to some extent, but in a well lit scene you can derive a tangible benefit from all those extra pixels. It is also meant to help in low light recording too, but I haven't had a chance to look too closely at that yet. What I do know is I use my phone as a dash cam when driving, and 4k recording means details such as license plates and facial features are crisper and much easier to see. Recording such beautiful footage of my young children is pretty amazing too, because it's something they'll appreciate when they're much older. I've read some complaints about the power of the SGS5, but coming from the SGS2 I can't get on board with that - sure, there may be better experiences out there, but in terms of the responsiveness of the handset and what you can get away with, the SGS5 is brilliant IMO. For example, while driving I have a dash cam app recording the trip (in 4k) a GPS speedo app overlaying my speed and satnav running in the foreground. Sometimes I may even be streaming Bluetooth audio. Running these together on the SGS2 simply wasn't possible (five to ten second refreshes), but the S5 is a trooper that takes it all in its stride. I also love the IR transmitter and have it setup as a universal remote - far superior to any universal remote I've had the displeasure of wrangling in the past. 802.11AC is brilliant and gives me significantly more range than '11n on the same AP. Now if you're an Australian buyer, you want the SM-G900i (the Asian region model) excuse it can operate at 700mhz. This is the band Telstra and Optus will be switching on in January 2015, providing substantial improvements in range and performance. Don't buy the European version as it lacks this band. Finally, the S5 is available for around $550 these days (about what I paid for mine), which is significantly lower than most other phones in its class. So for me, this is the best phone available that meets my needs, despite it no longer being the 'latest thing'.

Panasonic Eneloop Pro 950mAh AAA Rechargeable Battery Precharge BK-4HCCE 4pcs

You should replace all your AAA batteries with these
Not all batteries are created equal. I've wasted a very great deal of money on batteries, trying to find good, high quality batteries with sufficient capacity to run high discharge devices like my digital camera. Standard high-capacity rated NiMH batteries proved to be a big waste of cash. Normal AA batteries manage a dozen shots or four minutes of footage before they have insufficient charge remaining. Lithium disposable batteries are ok, but still need to be swapped out fairly quickly, and they're pretty expensive for what you get out of them. So for a long time I wished there was a high capacity rechargeable battery that wasn't useless six months after purchase. Li-Ion batteries in laptops are certainly able to meet such requirements, so why not something in standard battery sizes? Well, now there is. Eneloop batteries can be recharged, but retain their charge like alkalines. They also 'wear' much better than standard NiMH batteries, lasting years longer. The Panasonic Eneloop Pro series is far and away the best of this type of battery, having significantly higher capacity for high discharge devices like cameras. The tradeoff is they have a shorter life, but when you work out how long it will take before you've reached 500 cycles you will quickly realise how much value you will get out of them before they need to be replaced. Compared to Alkaline or Lithium disposable batteries, you will quite literally save yourself hundreds of dollars if you're a regular battery user. Do be aware, however, that the quality of your battery and the charge you can get out of it comes down to the quality of the battery *and* the quality of the charger. Good batteries with a cheap or poorly designed charger won't last as long (because they won't be charged to their correct capacity) and they will burn out faster. There are a handful of good chargers available, but I would recommend people look at the Opus BT-C3100, which is both cheaper *and* better than competing brands and models. So buy these - replace all your AAA batteries with these and a good charger. Your devices will run longer and you'll save yourself a truckload of money. In short, the perfect battery.
    100-240V to 12V 3A AC/DC Adapter Supply Power 5.5 x 2.1mm Plug IEC320 C8 Socket

Good, cheap replacement for faulty AC adapters
This type of AC adaptor is almost universal for external HDD docks, as I have three, all different brands, and this plug size, voltage and current draw (in Amperes) is identical for all of them. For less than $13 I saved myself from having to replace an $80 dock. You'll find that AC adaptors tend to fail quite a lot, particularly if you have 'dirty' power from your electricity grid, or lots of electrical storms. Given how many devices these days rely on them for power, this could mean a lot of perfectly functional devices are discarded because the owner thinks them dead, but in reality it may be an AC adaptor that is the cause. I've even seen adaptors which output the correct voltage (when measured by a multimeter) but the device they're connected to still doesn't work - in that case it may have high frequency ripple that the multimeter can't detect, or it may be incapable of supplying sufficient current. A good, cheap replacement AC adapter is an inexpensive way to regain the use of your devices. Highly recommended!
