    Excellent resource by reputable authors
This book starts with a general discussion of health and nutrition, and the problem with our "high tech" fast food diets... not from a moral perspective, but how it impacts our physical bodies as far as vitamins and minerals, or lack thereof. It is clear the authors believe that most people ARE vitamin deficient, even severely deficient, due to the contemporary diet. The authors go into a brief history on some vitamins, such as Vitamin C. Then they focus on each vitamin and mineral specifically, with a discussion on how our bodies use each vitamin / mineral. Under each specific item, they have a brief intro, then break it down into "therapeutic uses" and "optimum dose"; those cover what the vitamins/ minerals do for the body and what can happen when our bodies become deficient, and dosages to help us regain our proper vitamin/ mineral balance. They discuss specific conditions that may be affected by deficiencies such as: Vit B-2 (riboflavin) - migraines, cataracts; Vit B-3 (niacin) - schizophrenia, low stomach acid, anxiety disorders etc; Vit B-6 - autism, carpal tunnel, arterioscleriosis, etc; Vit B-12 (cobalamin)- breast cancer, chronic fatigure, psych disorders, etc; Magnesium - ADHD, hyperactivity; Zinc - eating disorders, etc. They include a list of food sources for each vitamin / mineral at the end. The authors include an important and informative discussion on the idea of RDAs, which they believe are totally underestimated; they believe the RDAs only establish a minimum value to avoid serious illness, such as the minimum amount of Vitamin C to prevent scurvy. Therefore, the RDA for particular vitamins and minerals do not bring people into optimum health, but only provide just enough to prevent serious illness. The other problem with the RDAs is that they were set so many years ago and based on healthy young males - what about females, children, pregnant women, those with health problems or even a young male who is not optimally healthy & fit? They also include an eye-opening discussion on low stomach acid and how that can negatively affect our whole body, plus how that may be relatively easy to remedy for some. Pros: Much information you won't see in the mainstream books. Well written, easy to read unlike some medically-oriented books. A bit of dry humor goes into it too. Plus it is obvious that the authors are passionate about this topic. I appreciate the practical advice, and the optimism of the authors. I enjoyed reading the brief case studies, as well. I also liked that the authors did not seem to have the attitude "this is the one and only cause / solution" but seem more open-minded. It helps to know they are not selling products, either! Cons: The book is attempting to cover a huge field in an average size book (300 pages of text), so I'm sure much material is omitted. (Though the size makes it easier to get through, on the other hand.) There is no index to look up references to specific vitamins / minerals, and the table of contents is pretty brief, so if you are looking up a specific vitamin you just have to page through the chapter on Vitamins to find the section (though they are discussed in order, eg Vitamin B-2 is followed by B-3 and so on), or scan the pages in the Minerals section. I also liked the tons of references at the back of the book so I can find articles/ books for further reading. This is a book I HIGHLY recommend to any of my friends interested in this topic.

    Informative book on essential oils
This is an excellent book covering how aromatherapy works on the body (and mind), how to use essential oils, and some homemade recipes for things like creams & ointments. The author includes 2-page descriptions of about 20 specific essential oils which show pictures of the plant and the oil, where the plants typically grow, brief historical info, and the physical and psychological benefits -- plus a note of any cautions to be taken, eg certain oils to avoid when pregnant or not to use on children. A few pages near the back of the book cover different ailments and which oils to use, eg under circulatory problems, a couple of specific common ailments & the recommended oils to use. There is also a list of resources in the back. Pros: Brief and to the point. Helpful for those brand new to using essential oils / aromatherapy. Nice photos and illustrations. Bulleted lists of beneficial uses makes it easy to review. I like that there was not only the materia medica listing for each oil, but that you could do a quick check under ailment to see which oils to use for a particular condition. Cons: I wish more essential oils were included. Also, the oils are not listed in alphabetical order (I think Yarrow and Angelica are some of the first few listed); the table of contents does not list the page for each oil but just lists the starting page for the Materia Media, and you can't find the page for a particular essential oil by index either. But it is not a large book so that isn't a huge problem. I borrowed this from the library and liked it, but ended up purchasing other books on this topic. After many months, I kept remembering how helpful this book was so I bought it so I could have access to it any time. I use this probably every week!
