Against Gilgamesh, not this translation
I have not read any other versions of the Gilgamesh epic myth, but I doubt they are much different, so this is commentary on the story instead of this particular version. Gilgamesh is horrible. He is the worst "hero" I have read since my Greek mythology tried to convince me that Medea was heroic for her serial murders. He embodies NONE of the traditional heroic characteristics that one might want to instill in their children, and the story is not even well written. The basic outline of the story: 1) Gods make Gilgamesh and he is amazing 2) Since he is better than anyone else on Earth, he mistreats them 3) Gods get mad and create bizarro-Gilgamesh to kill him 4) They fight, but are evenly matched so they become friends 5) They make fun of the gods and ruin more of their stuff 6) Gilgamesh's new friend dies, he becomes sad, and tries to defeat death 7) He cannot. So, the moral of the story is that if you are powerful you should stomp on the people around you and defy authority, gods make horrible mistakes, and even the "best" man in the world is an utter failure. Except my little synopsis is better than the original because it can be read more quickly and doesn't try to pretend it is an epic story.

Good Enough to Watch
This movie is probably a hit-or-miss thing with most people since it has very few "flashy" features to it. It is a very sad look at a trapped suburban family, so if you're into that then you will enjoy. If you want a more uplifting experience, I suggest you still get this movie so that you can understand and more thoroughly enjoy all of the pop-cultural references to it. There are some very quotable and memorable parts of this movie that when presented in any given crowd can make you seem like either a genius or a film-buff, which are both good things to appear to be sometimes.

Variety, Depth, and Beauty
This movie is the perfect combination of funny, sad, scary, and cool as it combines a troubled childhood with time-travel and the sometimes ridiculous ramifications of how they combine. A grown-up film, Ashton steps into the role surprisingly well. The story is about constantly changing one's story, so there is little progression, but that's really the point. The movie symbolizes everyone's struggle for a satisfying life, and one man's determination to make life what it should be, not what is just acceptable.
