Classic
How could you not love this heart-warming tale? Even if you can't relate to the hard-knocks of growing up in an orphanage, most of us can identify with the big, Cinderella-like dream of living in a mansion and living the 'good life'... the best part is that with all the money and privilege that Annie falls into, she holds the most important things dear to her: love and friendship. Countless musical staples, including "Tomorrow" and "Its a Hard-Knock Life". Carol Burnett steals the show as a drunk and abusive Ms. Hannigan. Growing up, this was my first exposure to her talents, and she remains one of my favorite comic actresses to this day.

MASTERPIECE
This timeless classic is dear to my heart. It is an Oscar winner that, if it was produced today, would still beat the best. Gene Kelly soars as a struggling American artist working the creative streets of Paris. Things get difficult when, after receiving the patronage and attentions of a rich and attractive heiress, he falls in love with a french shop girl, Lise. Musical classics are boundless in this Gershwin masterpiece: "Our Love is Here to Stay", "I Got Rhythm", "Nice Work If You Can Get It", "'S Wonderful", "Embraceable You", "(I'll Build a) Stairway to Paradise" As an American who has lived in Paris, I'm ever charmed by the international cast and the Parisienne atmosphere. Incredible. See it. Period.

RENTal
I have the sneaky suspicion that those individuals who rave about the qualities of this particular movie are part of the stage production fan club... Rightly so, because this movie was made for them!! The storyline jumps around too much. Attempts at cutting the show down resulted in a loss of character depth and story flow. I absolutely love the music and have seen the show in NYC, and I felt that the movie was shockingly lackluster. Thank goodness it was a rental, because I had to keep explaining the storyline and characters to my friend (a girl who was unfamiliar with the story). The actors were far too old to be reassuming their 20-something roles... the penniless bohemian lifestyle appears far more pathetic when applied to grown men and women pushing 40. The MOST IMPRESSIVE Angel character didn't get the attention s/he deserved. The movie jumped around so much that the audience has a hard time sincerely caring about any of them. The creators managed to take a show that is amazingly touching only to water-down every character. They turned the plot into something that is remarkably average and fails to capture the power of the original. On a happier note, the music is still amazing!! It deals with very real and controversial issues (AIDs, homosexuality, homelessness, urban development). I recommend this for music fans. The movie isn't bad; it just average. The disappointing part is watching it knowing how much potential it had.
