Twenty to make-Sugar Animals
1 of 1 found this helpful Love this little book!! Packed full of easy to follow sculpted animals and their parts, demonstrating each step of the progression from ball stage to finished characters. School age kids and up will have fun learning about sculpting and adding cute expressions to the monkey, crocodile, koala, lion, snake, hippo, giraffe, zebra, leopard, raccoon, elephant and more. Sugar sculpting is a fun addition to birthday cake and cupcake decorating, and birthday party activities. I can picture a group of kids and teens making their favorite animal. Make ahead a sampling of animals to decorate the big cake and surround it with bowls of colorful sugar paste, and pre baked plain cupcakes. Be sure to have a book for each as a guide and take home party favor!!
Using sugar paste is great for small kids because it is edible and non toxic. The snake, dolphin and seal are the easiest shapes with few additions, a great beginner sculpture for tiny kids. Parental supervision suggested as with all kids projects. Pre colored sugar paste can be found at most craft stores in the cake decorating section. I collect sculpture books, and have not seen this one available at my local craft stores.I suggest buying it here. Kids will be inspired to make other animals once they are familiar with this books break down of how to make and attach bodies, limbs and tails. Thinking 3 dimensionally is an exciting learned skill . This book is my favorite!!
I have an art degree in ceramic sculpture, and have worked with my home schooled kids with kitchen projects such as this one. My 22 year old daughter is still baking and decorating cupcakes for her book club and birthday parties . Her friends have said its the best kind of party ever!! Hope you enjoy this book, and my suggestions---- from Sandra

Australia Here We Come, clay sculpting all the way
This is book #5 in the Friesen Sculpture series. So far I like this book best of the bunch, because there are way more interesting things to look at from her travels to Australia, and her sculpting interpretation of them. It gives the reader ideas for travel and to bring home things for sculpting projects from as far as all over the world, or as close as your back yard. there is a section about sculpting tree trunks with beads for your animals to hang out on or make koalas seen on the cover. The style of the animals, flowers and tropical plants is done with Australian flavor, like the way they decoratively paint with dots. This is an easy way to add color and interest to your own style of sculpting. I would definitely say yes to this book, and suggest continuing to collect all the books in her set. 5 Star Rating!!

Realistic Animal Sculptures
As a child I was first introduced to animal sculpture in a museum class. Children love animals, and relate to them. Although this book has an advanced approach to the step by step color photo numbered instructions, kids will enjoy learning making forrest animals pictured here. The list is long-deer mouse, cottontail rabbit, seal, black bear, basset hound, white tail fawn, red fox, bull frog, blue bird and siamese kitten. The final chapter is about changing the size, posing, and setting or finish. After you make your realistic animal you will want to create a natural environment for your realistic looking furry friend. Suggestions are found here such as a pond for the bull frog, using real moss. Making dioramas for school projects? This book would be very helpful.
I bought the book because of the realistic posed cute animals. My sculpture book collection would not be complete without it. The mouse and rabbit are irresistible!
