VINTAGE MERRILL STEREOPHONIC STA 24 TUBE AMPLIFIER AMP STEREO NATIONAL
    20 December 2017
    A great surprise!
I was not expecting much from this little stereo amp and thought it would make a fun little project. So I cleaned it up and started in on the restoration. The first thing I do with any vintage gear is to replace the power cord with a grounded cable. The Merrill uses the chassis as ground so I thought I might have to create a ground bus if there was any hum as a result, but the amp is very quiet with no hum. I then installed a nice low impedance choke on the power supply side of the chassis and installed new capacitors under the chassis leaving the originals in place for looks. The first cap is 20uF and the second after the choke is 470uF. This eliminates any power supply hum entirely. I installed a new 100k Alps stereo volume control and wired it directly into the grid of the 12AT7 completely eliminating all the front end tone controls and switches. This was a substantial improvement and really is just as important as the power supply upgrades. A previous owner had installed new coupling caps or I would have done this next. The results were astonishing. This amp with its tiny output transformers is incredibly clean and clear sounding with surprising bass on efficient speakers. So that's the recipe: new grounded power cord; beef up the power supply; eliminate the entire front end. The results on efficient speakers makes you want to listen to music all night.
