Finest original Sci-Fi film of the last 15 years!
1 of 1 found this helpful I was intrigued by this film from the beginning - after all, it had a good pedigree; One of the finest modern day documentary filmakers: Neill Blomkamp directing, with Peter Jackson (director of King Kong and Lorf of the Rings) on production duties. The thing that draws you in is the intriguing storyline, told in a present-day setting of Johannesburg in South Africa - an area already rife with ongoing racial tensions from the apartheid-era political structure. Throw into this volatile mix a third party of 'aliens', arriving almost by accident(?) from another world, that, after years of so called repatriation, end up being another dissaffected race let down by an unsympathetic government, end up the object of hatred for both the African and White South African peoples. The film follows a young field officer sent in to deal with removing the Aliens (known as 'prawns' in local slang after their appearance) from 'District 9', to relocate them to another refugee camp. It begins with on camera interviews with people connected with an 'incident' spoken about in past tense, interspursed with life like news items of the aliens arrival and subsequent decent into 'pest' status. As a cameraman follows the hero - Wikus Van Der Merwe (brilliantly played by Sharlto Copley) - on his first day on the job, and superbly filmed in handheld camera style - you find yourself pulled in and immersed in this gritty world of alien squalor 'Soweto-style' tin shack townships. For all the stark, grimy and blistering imagery on screen, the film has real heart at its core, and come the final 30 minutes, its hard not to feel pity for the oppressed visitors who, at the of the day, just want to go home.
The DVD doesn't have a huge amount in the way of extras, but has a good 3part short doc' called 'The Alien Agenda' a filmakers log, along with Deleted scenes and some DVD exclusives covering concepts and designs as well as a big section on the films Hero; Wikus transforming, plus a piece on Alien visual effects. If you want more, there'll no doubt be a 2 disc in the coming months, but this certainly gives more than value for money.
I'd thoroughly reccomend buying this copy on USA Region 1 DVD (if you have multi region DVD player), as it has everything the same as the UK-editon, but at only £8 with (very quick) post! Hit that button and 'BUY IT NOW'!!!
