A Design Classic
I bought our first blue Falcon enamel tea pot forty-eight years ago and we have used it ever since. No longer bright white inside, I will admit, and in one spot the enamel has chipped, but in every other respect it is the same elegant and functional vessel it ever was. Last month my daughter, in the midst of setting up on her own and valueing the fact that our blue teapot has presided over almost fifty years of family hospitality, asked if she could now have it for herself. Who would have said yes immediately? But with her birthday coming up I suddenly realised the pointlessness of holding on to everything; and I have now wrapped it up for her as a present, together with the tea cosy knitted for it by her grandmother. So now I have bought another one. I was stunned to find the same design still available after all this time, and at some fraction of the cost of - in my opinion - it's real value. What's different? The colour is just slightly different - only to the point that you can tell them apart, but equally attractive - and the design of the base has been very slightly modified, for the better. So here is testimony to this Falcon teapot lasting at least half a century - it's quite indestructible; to its fresh bright unfading colour; to its timelss fresh clean modern lines. It's a design classic; and a price that is astonishing.
