A dated device with substantial limitations. Know what you're buying!
These are great little machines. I've wanted one since I first saw it back in 1998. They hold up well, hp's quality is high, and many of them were barely used. However, be aware of what you're getting. The 680 is great for taking notes and personal information management, with two caveats: it has a small keyboard. If you have bigger fingers, you'll probably regret the purchase. You also cannot sync the data with your Windows 7 or Vista computer. The machine also has some additional limitations that are worth noting. First, it has no headphone plug and a mono speaker. So you won't be using it as an mp3 player while typing. Second, while you can buy a 16 bit (remember that, 16 bit) PCMCIA card for wifi, it will only work with a router set up with WEP encryption. If you live in the city and have a zillion neighbours aching to steal your wifi, you should know that WEP isn't very good encryption and probably isn't the greatest idea. The browser is outdated in any case, and won't render sites well. The processor is also too slow for good web surfing. All of that being said, it is what it is: a solid little note taking and PIM machine. If you want more, I'd recommend the Jornada 720/728 (for mp3s and marginally better browsing), the NEC mobilepro 900/900c (larger keyboard and the benefits of the 720/728), or, if you really like the small form factor but want modern performance, a sony p-series. To learn a lot more about these machines, especially if you're considering bidding on one, visit HPC:Factor. The last of the diehard HPC fans congregate there.
