A good introductory book - very motivational.
1 of 1 found this helpful I found this book at an REI when I first started contemplating a triathlon. As the first book I bought on the subject, I found it completely fascinating. I hadn't read about triathlons before, and knew little of the sport. I found the heart rate training a bit confusing at first, but am completely sold on the idea now. Heart rate monitors help you train more efficiently - making the most of the miles.
The personal perspectives of Sally Edwards are great. As a person who has helped make female triathlons more accepted and recognized, she brings a clear understanding of what it means to many women to become a triathlete. She was participating back when this was considered a rogue sport.
After reading this book, I would recommend it for the novice or beginner. It is motivational, informational, with humor and moments of tears. However, it is not a technical manual or a comprehensive book on technique. It is also not a book that will help you construct a beginning training plan - there are some vague guidelines, but not enough direction for the beginner. Unless you are receiving professional training, you will require more than this book to adequately prepare for your first marathon. However, I would still recommend this book as a must read for any beginning triathlete (male or female).

Triathlon Swimming Made Easy - and Enjoyable!
1 of 1 found this helpful I purchased this book and the accompanying Freestyle Made Easy DVD and committed myself to trying the Total Immersion approach to swimming. Previously I had always struggled with the swim leg of a triathlon, expending too much energy. I spent one month of doing daily Total Immersion drills - and my swimming has improved dramatically. I am swimming much more efficiently. I now have the confidence to swim anywhere, anytime. For me, I needed the DVD with the book in order to understand the instructions for the drills - but I've never had formal training in swimming before. If you're a more accomplished swimmer you may find that you do not need the DVD.
This morning's swim was 2000 meters. It felt like a good stretch - my muscles are not fatigued, I wasn't out of breath, it was just a smooth swimming session. It's nice to be able to enjoy my swim training.
The author also shares some strategic tips specific to triathlon competitions.
