SONY XDR-S41D Portable DAB+/FM Radio - White - Slight Fault
17 June 2020
Easy to use, sounds great and reasonable battery life.
I have several portable radios, including some small personal DAB radios and another DAB+ portable I bought a short time ago but this Sony is the one I actually use more than any of them, several times a day at the moment. I am using hybrid rechargeable batteries and get several hours use from each charge. It's a shame that the radio doesn't charge the batteries when run from the external power supply but never mind. The controls are very easy to use with the power button plus the five presets on the top, the rotary volume control and the simple channel selection system.. The volume range is also very good compared to some of the other radios with electronic stepped volume controls I own which don't adjust low enough for use in the bedroom at night. This one will turn down to a very low level if required. The usual Sony build quality really shows. Overall I thoroughly recommend this radio over some of the cheaper ones on the market.

Overall a good phone but talktime a little short compared to others.
This smartphone is now about three years old and uses Windows Mobile 6.1 instead of the now more popular Android operating systems, this makes it slightly more difficult to download applications. However software for the Windows Mobile/Pocket PC system is widely available on the net and since it is a few years older has probably been debugged more thoroughly. It is probably best to download software using a desktop PC and then install it using the supplied Active Sync 4.5 software. The display on this phone is very clear and the installed Toshiba User Interface (actually SPB Shell 3.5 software) which acts as a PDA interface is quite versatile and is designed to be operated with a finger. If you drop out of the Shell into the actual 6.1 operating system you have to use a stylus as the standard windows on screen keyboard has very small keys. The integrated stylus which is the upper right corner of the case is very light but due to its strange shape is quite difficult to use. The Micro SD Card slot is a little unusual in having no cover but this does make it easy to change cards if necessary. It has an 8Gb limit but this is plenty of space to store MP3s, pictures, documents and a few videos. The phone is Quad band and has GSM, 3G, HSDPA, HSUPA, EDGE, GPS, A-GPS, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. It also has SMS, MMS, Email, video calls and IM, so it has all the connections you may ever need. The battery life on standby is quite good and should last at least three to five days but the time when it is being used for calls, internet browsing or using any communications is very short at only four hours, however the battery can be changed quite easily if you carry a spare as the back comes off very quickly and the phone has built in backup power to save settings. One thing I did find a little awkward was because the touch screen is quite sensitive it very easy to accidentally push buttons with your ear while actually making a call, although you will have the same problem on most touch screen phones. Also you have to push the phone Send button to answer a call, other buttons have no effect apart from End which rejects the call. Other phones I have used allow you to push any button to accept a call except the End key, which rejects the call. Using a Bluetooth headset or the speakerphone function gets around these problems of course. It occasionally gets into a rather confused state when using the phone lock and a headset in which it will not unlock and has to be reset to get it working again, I have not found out exactly what combination of events causes this yet. Overall a good phone with lots of connection possibilities and a clear display but let down by the short battery life whilst actually making calls.

Generally a very versatile machine, thoroughly recommended at the price.
This type of Pocket PC PDA is now quite mature technology, which has the advantage that there is a large quantity and variety of software applications available to download for it. The Toshiba E800 uses Windows Mobile 2003 SE and has a 400Mhz processor, 128Mb of main memory and 64Mb of flash disc built in along with both CF and SD card slots so adding storage to it is very easy. It comes in two models, one with built in Wi-Fi, the other with Bluetooth but SD card Wi-Fi and Bluetooth adapters are available which can be used to give the unit both connection systems, although they cannot be used at the same time on this device. There are a number of web sites with free and paid for software for the Pocket PC but not all of it runs on this age of machine, there are later generations of PPC OS, 5.0, 6.1 and 6.5, which mainly run on more recent smartphones. The range of software which runs on a computer this small is really quite surprising, most of it being of a high quality. Most applications for PPC are quite compact, to be able to fit into the relatively small main memory (compared to desktop computers), but this means you can store a large number on a 4Gb CF Card along with MP3s, videos and pictures. The screen on this unit is slightly larger than the more common Pocket PDAs and unusually has full VGA resolution which makes the display much clearer with program designed to run on VGA displays, although not all software uses the higher number of pixels. The standard software is quite good and syncs with Outlook on a normal desktop computer for appointments, tasks and contacts to give the PDA functions. Generally a very versatile machine, a little larger and heavier than other Pocket PCs or smartphones but the larger screen makes up for the increased size. Battery life is at least four hours, probably more with a new battery. Thoroughly recommended at the price they are now available on eBay.
