Japan at War by Time-Life Books
28 November 2019
Life in mid 20th century Japan under right-wing militarism
The United States fought Japan for four years but only understood them through a very narrow lens that was more of an ignorance-based propaganda campaign than an honest evaluation of who they were. That uninformed position took hold long before Pearl Harbor was attacked. This is a look at how the wars Japan fought from 1931 to 1945 affected the Japanese and their every day lives. It's also a lesson on what happens when far-right wing zealots get control of the military and the government and give themselves almost unchecked power claimed in the name of the Emperor. By 1945, Japan lay in ruins after those zealots pursued exactly the programs and policies they wanted, and the Emperor was ineffective at stopping it. The book is laid out in the usual Time-Life format; well-researched articles by knowledgeable authors spaced between excellent collections of photographs relevant to the chapters.

You'll be able to handle any situation
This was purchased for a family member as a holiday gift. They are the outdoors type and had expressed an interest in what they could or should do in case of an emergency or a life-threatening event. They told me they just casually began reading it Christmas night and by the second chapter they couldn't put it down. It was filled with short, concise, well-written articles on how to survive many natural disaster, how to find food, drinking water, shelter, how to make snares, filters, rudimentary medical treatment and a lot more. There are easy to follow directions and drawings to refer to, and the booklet is small enough to fit in your pocket to take with you when you go far away from human habitation. They considered it an invaluable guide for anyone who wants to be prepared...for anything.
New OEM MDR-AS40 clip-on Over the Ear Hook Running headset earphone for Sony mp3

Inexpensive, but you get what you pay for
Sony is usually a good name in headphones. They missed the boat on these things. They are inexpensive, and have a sound quality to match; very little bass or high range, and a tinny mid-range. It feel like a straw when they are in your ears but they do stay in when jogging and they don't get soaked by sweat. Those are their only redeeming qualities.
