About

I used to be a business person before becoming disabled. I'm not a store owner on ebay or otherwise. I'm just a person who likes to get rid of stuff now and then. I also like to buy stuff too!

How to Make an American Quilt -a look at love & friends
It is hard to go wrong with a cast this strong and this movie doesn't let the viewer down. Ellen Burstyn (Hy) and Anne Bancroft (Glady Jo) are fantastic as rather free thinking, older sisters who are always sparring while loving each other and Burstyn's granddaughter, Finn, played by Winona Ryder. Finn is a graduate student trying to finish her thesis while spending time at the home of her grandmother and great aunt. There she also spends time away from her fiance, Sam played by Dermot Mulroney, wondering if she is making the right decision to marry. Each day the quilting circle meets to complete Finn's wedding quilt and Finn has a chance to share her fears with individual members while they share their stories of loves lost and lives found. This movie is one larger story wrapped around several shorter stories. Each story is well defined, yet still blended into the larger story without any contrived actions. The photography is very good in allowing flashbacks to flow in and out of the present day of the movie and uphold the mood of the person telling the story. The movie is based on a book that I have read and stays pretty true to it, using only a small amount license to allow the movie move in ways it couldn't if filmed exactly as written. The only thing I did't like about the movie was the introduction of Finn's mother and father. Some how, though I think they are mentioned earlier, when Finn's mother shows up I felt I should have known more about her already. She was, at first, somewhat out of place. Later, her appearance and personality fit into the story quite well. Other cast members include Jean Simmons, Rip Torn, Claire Danes, Kate Capshaw, Alfre Woodard, Jared Leto, Adam Baldwin, Kate Nelligan and the wonderful poet, Maya Angelou. Though I know several men who have enjoyed this movie with their wives, it is definitely directed towards women. I encourage women, young and old, to watch it with their best friends, daughters, mothers, grandmothers, aunts, cousins, etc. You'll find you have a lot to talk about afterwards.

A Knight's Tale, good for more than one night's viewing
You can't rate this movie as excellent, because its never going to be a classic movie in the genre of Lord of the Rings. It trys to be a genuine, well-set tale of peasant made knight, but it doesn't quite make it. However, if you approach this movie with the idea that its not an absolutely accurate depiction of medieval times, you will enjoy it. There is great modern music, which I know many people thought shouldn't be a part of it, but I found refreshing for the overall attitude of the movie. The actors worked well together and individually. There were many good funny lines and many poignant moments. The jousting scenes with the evil knight were terrific and plentiful. Heath Ledger is an excellent hero, trying to make a name for himself as a knight, win the hand of the royal Lady, and make his father proud. This is a movie to be enjoyed more than once!

Good Reading Mystery Stuff!!
Jane Wheeler, estate sale and garage sale picker or buyer for other antique sellers is trying to organize her life after misplacing a permission slip for her son and realizing she and her husband are youngish middle age. Her childhood friend, Tim Lowry, florist, decorator and fine antiques dealer is trying to train her to be a fine antques dealer to partner with him. Detective Bruce Oh, whom she has had contact with in the past when she discovered dead bodies, has retired to become a private detective and wants her to be his partner. Detective Oh calls her to help on a special case that she can't refuse. His wife, Claire, has been accused of murder and believes that Jane is the perfect person to help clear her name. The mystery surrounds a rich version of a 60's artist commune, a questionable chest of rare value, and many artistic attitudes. This book spoke to the faithful garage saler and mystery lover in me. While it did have some weaknesses in the storyline as to some of Jane's activities, otherwise I found it intriguing and well written. After reading part of the book I discovered that there were two prior Jane Wheeler books, however, this book was a self-contained story and it was unnecessary to read the other books first. I like this one well enough that I plan to read the earlier books, Killer Stuff and Dead Guy's Stuff.
