A criminally underrated Sci-Fi/Horror Movie
Chilling and spine-tingling!

The Other (1972)
I saw the movie "The Other" on AMC Friday night horror back in May. I have never heard of it, nor any of the actors in the movie (save John Ritter). But as I watched the movie, it reminded me of my favorite type of horror flick--creepy, suspenseful, yet not gory or a gross out. It is definitely a psychological thriller in the vain of "Rosemary's Baby" or even "The Omen." Director Robert Mulligan has made quite a few gems over the years, from his acclaimed "To Kill A Mockingbird" to the "Summer of '42" to Reese Witherspoon's debut in "The Man in the Moon" this is an underrated movie to say the least.
The film stars the superb acting coach Uta Hagen as the matriarch of a family with a psychic gift, nicknamed the "game." "Playing the game" means that the character playing gets to see through the eyes of others, through their perspective. She passes the gift to the twin boys of the family Niles and Holland. Niles and Holland as 12 year old boys, get along fairly well, but Niles is always lamenting the fact that his brother is up to mischief, and when I mean mischief, I don't mean frying ants on the sidewalk, but more sinister things. Niles seems to be the family favorite while Holland is the black sheep. When the boys learn the gift, its consequences are dire and about halfway through the movie we are hit with a plot bombshell that punches us in the gut and makes us wish we could go back into the movie and revisit the scenes and wonder if what we really saw, really indeed was there. By the end of the movie, we are left somewhat puzzled about the climax, as the director Mulligan, and the writer Tom Tryon (the former actor who wrote the novel and the screenplay)leaves a little ambiguity making the viewer make up their own mind on what actually happened.
I highly recommend this movie. It is a movie that casual horror flick or even nonhorror aficiandos should enjoy. As a twin myself I see some parallels between the relationship of Niles and Holland (minus the mayhem) and all of the roles are strongly played. 4 stars out of 5.
