Where no man has gone before.
In 1979, the world was going sci-fi crazy following the success of Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica on TV. It seemed only a matter of time before Star Trek returned after it's unpopular demise in 1969. The budget was huge, the effect's, for the time, were top draw, the original crew were back, William Shatner had a new hair do and a whole new, totally rebuilt Enterprise. This movie was to be the vehicle to relaunch the Trek franchise into the 80's and become a rival for the total success that Star Wars had become. The story sees the Kirk being promoted to Admiral, taking Kirk away from his beloved Enterprise, to occupy an Earth bound post. Kirks successor is Captain Will Decker, a handsome young man recently promoted to be Enterprise's new Captain. Decker starts his posting by overseeing the 18 re-design and refit of the legendary Enterprise, literally making the ship his own, with the help of all of the original crew, minus Spock and McCoy, who have both resigned their commissions and left Starfleet. Earth intercepts transmissions from Klingon space showing a battle with a huge alien vessel clouded in an energy field. The Klingon vessels are destroyed in the fray, and the great vessel continues to Earth. Starfleet decide to send the Enterprise to investigate, due to her being the only ship that could intercept the threat before it arrives at earth. Kirk, seeing this as his last chance to go out on a dangerous mission on what he still sees as his ship, takes command of the Enterprise, he also finds McCoy and convinces him to reactivate his commission. Spock, undergoing a final purge of emotion on Vulcan, senses this great Vessels intelligence and seeks out the Enterprise, re-joining his ship mates. After some problems with the Warp drive the Enterprise reaches the great vessel where it is taken inside to be studied by the Alien intelligence. Spock manages to communicate, only briefly, with the intelligence, who now sees the Human race as an infestation that should be removed from it's creators planet after it has broadcast a signal to it's creator, a signal that has not been answered. Decker, Kirk, Spock and McCoy then bluff the intelligence into taking them into the centre of it's being, there they discover the true nature of the great vessel history and purpose. Needless to say, the day is saved and the movie opens up the possibility of future sequels. The film, although promising much, seemed cold, not delivering the original warmth, humour, comrade ship and sense of family that the original series strong point. Whether this was purposeful done to show the passage of time, how the crew grew away from each other in their absence, because as the film progresses, the characters begin to gel with each other much better. The story can be a little vague and hard to fully understand at times, with not many explanations being provided, or background story as to the Vessels origin. The only knowledge we glean is from Spock's mind meld and supposition from Kirk, McCoy and Decker. Obviously the movie is now dated, more dated than Star Wars will ever be, but it is still well worth watching for the interplay of main characters, the still quite good effects and the beautiful re-design of the Enterprise. If you could get it, the region 1 DVD special edition is well worth a viewing, with new CGI footage, extra deleted scenes and a little more of the story being explained.

Iron Maiden-Powerslave
Here we have a classic Iron Maiden album from the golden era of spandex and big hair! This is one of my faves from their long and distinguished career as gods of the original metal movment. This includes the Ryme Of The Ancient Mariner, a thirteen minute epic of moody and atmospheric music that brings the old Albatross back to life. The title track takes you back to ancient eygpt and the time of pyramids and pharaoh's with a tale of death and life. Also includes Lost For Words, a fast paced instrumental track. If you enjoy classic metal then buy it, and pay homage to the Gods that are Iron Maiden!

Autobots! Transform And Roll Out!
It seems hard to believe that its over twenty years since we first saw these giant robotic characters on TV, I remember getting up very early on Saturday morning to watch them on the annoying Timmy Mallet's Wackaday show. But I remember thinking WOW!!! How cool is that! Robots that transform into cars and planes. Then came the toy line that saw the Autobot leader, Optimus Prime become THE hot must have toy that Christmas, and feeling lucky that I got one. The basics are that on planet Cybertron, a civil war rages between the peaceful Autobots and the evil Decepticons. The war has raged for many years, as a consequence Cybertron's supply of energy or Energon has been depleted. In order to defeat the Decepticons, the leader of the Autobots, Optimus Prime decides to head out into space to find a new source of energy. The Decepticons follow and in the ensuing battle inside the Autobot's ship, the craft is damaged then crash lands on a prehistoric planet known as Earth, taking the Decepticons and Autobots with it. Millions of years pass when a chance eruption of the volcanic mountain that contains the crashed Autobot craft wakes the slumbering ships computer. The Decepticons and Autobots are then rebuilt in the image of earth vhicles. The Decepticons then cause mayhem gathering energy and the Autobots try in vain to stop them. Interest has resurfaced by the release of the new 2007 film of the same name and up and coming sequel next year. Having been a big fan of the new film I thought id go back and watch how it all started and revive my old childhood memories. This four disc set is audio and picture remaster that bring clearer visual quality and a much better 5.1 sound quality. Some of the sound effects have been replaced with more realistic ones. A new menu system and commentary has been added and the whole package comes in an attractive card folder. The reverse of holder for the four disc's folds out into a painted scene depicting the majority of the main characters from this first season of transformers. So, get one and watch Prime, Megatron, Soundwave, Starscream, Jazz and all the rest of the big guys go for it!!
