Good blade for the money
I wanted to see how James Williams has gone about designing the smallest knife in the category of his Japan-inspired designs.
The knife is a made in China deal with a serious assisted opening. Almost flew out of my hand the first time when I wasn't paying enough attention to a properly firm grip. Easy to open and the LAWKS system makes it reasonably safe to use for cutting.
The blade is sharp'ish out of the box, and is obviously meant for piercing more so than slicing. The thumb stud actually makes the useful length of the blade somewhat shorter than expected, should one think of the effective penetration length before it stops. This being said, I think it is by far the best thumb stud shape that I've come across.
The blade shape is called "modified tanto". I suppose modified US-tanto would be more accurate. Overall the ratio of the handle to the blade and the opened general shape reminds me of the Scandinavian "puukko" knife. That is a very, very good thing. With the LAWKS on this works nearly as well as those fixed blade puukkos.
The grip on the knife is good, the scales are G10 I think and offer a moderately good grip for both hands, so it is truly an ambidextrous knife. The pocket clip is excellent: it allows for deep pocket carry and definitely does not dig into one's hand. The cool-looking carved kanji however does grind into your hand. Looks nicer than feels.
A bit more finishing here and there, rounding off of the acute edges on the scales, and a more thorough job in the sharpening & shaping of the blade edge, and that would elevate the knife to the next level.
There are some gripes, too. The build quality is OK, not stellar. The liner is a bit on the protruding side, and tends to dig in your hand a bit where your index finger lies, when opened. Also the liner is sometimes a bit tricky to close.
There is also the shape of the blade: in stead of a continuous sweep, there is the abruptly changing US-tanto angle. Sure, it looks cool as a cucumber but makes the blade that tiny bit more difficult to sharpen, and just a tad less of a generalist blade. Thus, while the right size, this knife isn't an edc blade by no means.
For a tactical I think it's too small and thick. The girth of the knife is surprisingly big for a pocket knife. But one can use it to quickly dispense with packing, for example so it isn't quite hopeless for edc either.
Having said all this I think it is good value, a sturdy little ninja-flicker. I love it to bits.
