Sometimes brilliant, sometimes not
For fans many of Pink Floyd's debut album "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" this is a must have. That album is seen as Syd Barrett's masterpiece, and indeed is one of my favorites. A good measure of whether or not you will like his follow-up works "The Madcap Laughs" and "Barrett" or the compilation "Opel" is your choice of favorites from "Piper". If you are a fan of Psychedelic rockers "Lucifer Sam" and "See Emily Play", or if you like the Proto-Prog rockers "Astronomy Domine" or "Interstellar Overdrive" then this box set is probably not for you. However, if your favorites were the whimsical "Gnome" or "Bike", then you MUST BUY this set. As a fan of all of these songs, I can truly say that I needed to acquire this set if only to explore the next chapters in the musical history of Syd Barret. It is sometimes brilliant, sometimes not. For example, on "Madcap" the track "No Man's Land" is an up-tempo rocker with fuzz-guitar worthy of anything on Jefferson Airplane's Surrealistic Pillow three years before. The track "Octopus" is perhaps one of Barrett's greatest works. And the mystical air about "Golden Hair" still gives me chills. The challenge with this album is that for every hit there are twice as many misses. Tracks like "Dark Globe" provide fodder for those who would say that Syd was descending into madness even as he recorded these songs. The lyrics border on babble or an ingenious poetry that I just didn't get. His second solo album "Barrett" sounds much more polished if not more focused. Just as in "Madcap" there are flashes of genius like "Baby Lemonade" which would have been right at home on the Small Faces album "Itchycoo Park" two years earlier. The track "Effervescing Elephant" is one of Barrett's most beloved songs with good reason. It is comparable to other whimsical favorites that only he could write. A track that is easily overlooked is "Wined and Dined", but it is beautiful in it's simplicity (actually one of my favorite Barrett tracks). There are, however, just as many tracks that miss the mark completely. Some, like "Maisie", are downright dismal. The compilation "Opel" is again hit or miss (mostly misses) with tracks spanning the years from 1968 to 1970. Some real diamonds in this collection are "Lanky" a track from 1968 that sounds like it could have been on the Quicksilver Messenger Service EP of that same year, and and outtake of "Late Night" which I quite prefer to the version that was included in "The Madcap Laughs". Most of the other tracks are either average or far below. Overall, this set is a musical trip that I am glad I undertook. If you can overlook the lows, the highs are worth the price of admission.

I found this product to be super easy to use, just take out the old filter and replace with the new one. Easy to find location on the front of the refrigerator is a plus.
