GERARD KENNY : THE SINGLES
I want you to imagine its a couple of weeks before Christmas and the family party is loomimg on the horizon. My sister is off to New York in the New Year and I need to make a special effort to single out this occasion. The answer was simple - bombard her with New York songs while she was eating her mince pies. I had several songs already (New York, New York by Sinatra; Manhatten by Ella FitzGerald etc) but the one I really needed was New York, New York (so good they named it twice) by Gerard Kenny. That was the only song I required from this singles album - but after I had heard "New York, New York" (several times) I played the whole album and found all sixteen songs were really engaging. I gained a really great collection - and my sister was absolutely delighted with her New York medley. If you like Easy Listening you must investigate this Singles Album.

CAMERA OBSCURA (LET'S GET OUT OF THIS COUNTRY)
"Lloyd, I'm ready to be heartbroken" is the first song on this album. It is a perfect opener for a near perfect album. Most of the songs are instantly likeable, while others grow on you over several plays. This is how a great album should be. Other highlights are "Come back Margaret", the title song, and "Razzle Dazzle Rose"; and there are no 'duds' or fillers. If you have not yet checked out Camera Obscura this is the album to get - and then buy 'My Maudlin Career' issued in 2009.

Gasoline Alley (Remaster) (CD 1998)
Okay, so this isn't an 'Every Picture tells a Story" or even a "Never a Dull a Moment" but it's almost there or thereabouts. 'Gasoline Alley' is pre-superstar, and maybe some will say all the better for it. It's folk and rock and much in between. There is no 'Maggie May' on this album, nor is there a 'You wear it well' but it's an honest album with no pretension. If you buy the first four Rod Stewart Albums (the other being 'An old raincoat won't ever let you down') you will not be diasapointed - and then check out Rod and the Faces albums - but you must have them all already, haven't you?
