Golf Spikes & Wrenches

Improve your swing with these stabilisers

Keep your golf shoes tip top by replacing your golf spikes. Replacing your spikes regularly keeps your golf shoes performing their best, meaning that your golf game will be at its best. Spikes are important as they provide extra stability and traction on the golf course, not just on the green but on the sand and other terrains too. Most shoes have 12 spikes: eight on the main body and four on the heel. There are several different fittings for different shoes but the best way to tell which type will fit your shoes is by removing the spike from its fitting. The best way to do this is by using a spike wrench, which you need to turn anti clockwise. If you are struggling with it, a great tip is to use a bit of petroleum jelly to ease it.

Material

When it comes to materials, there are three materials used for golf spikes: metal, ceramic and rubber. Originally, they were made from metal, which has great grip. Metal spikes are durable but they are heavy and require regular cleaning to make sure they dont rust. Rubber spikes are made from polyurethane, which is lightweight, giving your golf game an advantage. The disadvantage, however, is that their traction isnt great on wet grass and they need changing and replacing more than metal spikes. Ceramic spikes provide a middle ground between the metal and rubber as they are durable and dont wear down quickly. They are strong and abrasion resistant, however, they are connected with steel flanges which do need regular maintenance.

Fitting Your Spikes

After you have chosen which spikes to fit, you need to work out how to fit them on your golf shoes. Clean the inserts before putting your new spikes in. Turn clockwise and tighten with the wrench until it is securely in place.

There are many well known brands that make golf accessories including Nike, Adidas, Puma and Champ.
