One of the most important pieces of shop equipment that you would need in any automotive shop is an auto lift or frame machine. These allow you to lift any vehicle high enough in the air to perform a variety of tasks and services on the vehicle.
What Types of Auto Lifts Are There?
- 2-post lifts. These lifts are frame-engaging lifts. They have drive-through capabilities and come in two types, asymmetric and symmetric.
- 4-post lifts. The 4-post auto lift is the most common in the industry. These are sturdier than the 2-post lifts.
- Drive-on. These autolifts require the car to be driven onto a platform that is then raised into the air.
- Scissors. This style of car lift got its name from its accordion-like mechanism that raises the car.

- Jacks and jack stands. Jacks and stands are automotive supplies that raise a car up a few inches to a few feet.
