Bodhráns & Irish Drums

Bodhran Irish Drums

Bodhrán Irish drums are a very affordable percussion instrument and are suitable for both beginners and professionals. These simple framed Irish drums can sound very rhythmic, even quite soothing, when played by an experienced drummer and when it is a quality, well-made instrument. Sizes of the drum vary from 14-inches to 18-inches in diameter. The head is generally made of goat or calf skin or manufactured from a synthetic material. Many of the larger drums have a crosspiece which can be used as a handle.

Drum Care

Bodhrán drums are one of the finest world drums or ethnic drums on the market. In order to make sure that your drum lasts a long time, it is necessary to look after the skin on the frame. Store it in dry room temperature to ensure the skin on the drum head stays supple. Conditioning cream can be used to ensure long-lasting care.

Drum Beaters

There are a wide range of drum beaters, or tippers as they are otherwise known, available on the market. They range in length, shape, weight and balance, so it is important you find a tipper that responds well to your grip. Beginners may wish to choose a heavier stick with a lump or knot in the centre to maintain better control. As your technique improves, you can then choose a lighter stick for better manipulation and sound quality.

Decorated Drums

The percussion drums are extremely attractive in their own right with their simple wood frame and skin head surface. However, to keep in the Irish tradition, many Bodhrán drums can also be purchased with a colourful Celtic design. Whether they feature a Celtic cross, a Claddagh design, the Trinity print or even no image at all, there is no denying the beauty of the instrument.

Drum Technique

Like with all percussion instruments, it is all in the technique. The drums are held vertically either resting on the knee, held up with the arm or held by the crosspiece. The Irish drums use a consistent up and down movement with the tipper on the lower third of the drum head. It is a relatively easy instrument to play although it definitely takes time to master the sound of the Bodhrán drum like the professionals.
