How a Laser Level Works
Hilti laser levels are based on the principle that a beam of laser light is perfectly straight. This means that if you run a line of laser light along a wall or shine a point you can determine angles with perfect accuracy. Most laser levels use red diodes, which work well but can be hard to see in bright light. Green diode lasers are also available; they are more visible but also use more power than red lasers.
Types of Laser Level
Point and line levels often combine into the same instruments. Point levels determine 90-degree angles, while line levels are for basic indoor levelling. Many instruments offer multiple points and lines for greater accuracy. Hilti makes everything from a basic point laser to advanced multi-line models. A rotary laser sends out a single beam in a 360-degree circle; they are very accurate and are frequent tools on construction sites.
Laser Level Features
One of the most important features on industrial outdoor lasers is self-levelling. A self-levelling laser sets its own horizontal and vertical, and can reset when it gets bumped, so you don't have to spend time resetting your level. Battery life also matters, some lasers can last up to a hundred hours on a single charge, but it's always best to have a charger and spare batteries just in case.

The first laser level accessory anyone needs is a tripod to ensure it's mounted stably and stays in position. Working with red lasers you may also want laser receivers, especially for outdoor applications.
