The history of the Newtown Jets team song

We all know the words of the Newton Jets team song:

Newtown is coming,

Hear the Bluebags humming,

Newtown – Newtown

Newtown is flying – there’ll be no denying

Newtown – Newtown

These iconic lyrics have welcomed the Newton Jets to the field at Henson Park, game after game and season after season. The lively melody sets a tone of excitement, adventure, and above all, a community of people passionate about footy.

Origins of the Newton Jets team song

Written in the 1970s by New Zealand-born jazz musician Ricky May, the song expresses the determination and spirit of both the team and the club since its beginning in 1908. While the origins of the term “Bluebags” is uncertain, there has been speculation that the nickname was given to the Jets based on the location of Henson Park.

Here’s the team that takes the field,

It’s the team that will not yield.

As the oldest rugby league in Australia, the team boasts a number of influential players who have inspired footy generations for years, including:

Frank "Bumper" Farrell

This policeman played tough during his career, captaining the Jets to the semi-finals until 1948. Despite an incident in 1945 which coloured his career, Farrell still remains an influential and inspiring footy player.

Charles "Boxer" Russell

Serving as both a player, coach, and rugby league pioneer, Russel is responsible for the try that landed the Newton Kets their first premiership win in the 1910 season. Additionally, he went on to win an Olympic gold medal in 1908.
