Protecting a hot tub or spa when it is not in use is critical to prolonging its lifespan. However, each one has a different size and shape. When investing in spa or hot tub covers, owners will want to consider the environment in which they will store the system. When stored outside, a hard top is often advisable. An outdoor spa cover should fit snugly over the entire system to protect it from the elements. Some will cover not only the opening, but the electrical components. This provides ample protection throughout the non-use period.

For indoor spas or hot tubs, a hard cover may not be necessary. In this case, a flexible snug-fitting top works well. It will protect the open space and minimise damage to the structure. It does not provide weather protection, but it will allow for proper protection of the system when not in use.

It is possible to purchase an unbranded model, but prior to doing so, owners should carefully consider the size and shape of the open space, the type of covering and the attachments present. For ease, a branded hot tub or spa cover will work better because the manufacturer made it specifically for that product.

Portable spa covers are another option. For those that own a portable spa, the need for a cover depends on the type of model and the length of time it will be in storage. Some portable systems simply deflate or fold to allow for easy storage. Others can remain in use for weeks at a time, but should have the top opening covered when not in use. Select one specifically designed for this need.
