Our Feedback extortion policy protects both buyers and sellers by preventing the use of Feedback as a tool to force demands on anyone trading on eBay.

What are the main Feedback extortion rules for buyers?

Buyers can't use the threat of negative (or promise of positive) Feedback to get a seller to provide goods or services that weren't included in the original item's description or purchase price. Similarly, they can't use Feedback to force a seller to accept a return, or give a refund, if they're not required to by the terms of their listing, or the eBay Money Back Guarantee.

What are the main Feedback extortion rules for sellers?

Sellers can't force a buyer to provide positive Feedback in order to receive an item they've already purchased, or accept a return request. Similarly, they can't offer monetary compensation or additional items in return for positive Feedback.

Once a transaction is concluded, it's fine to ask buyers to leave positive Feedback, or to revise negative Feedback if you've been able to resolve their issue.

Feedback extortion policy overview

Buyers:

The buyer isn't allowed to threaten to use Feedback or detailed seller ratings in an attempt to force a seller into providing:

  • Goods or services that weren't included in the original item's description or purchase price.
  • A return, refund or replacement item not covered by the original listing or the eBay Money Back Guarantee.

If there is a problem with a transaction, the buyer should report the problem in My eBay.

Sellers:

The seller can't require a buyer to leave positive Feedback, specific detailed seller ratings, or revise existing Feedback in exchange for a number of things, including, but not limited to:

  • Receiving the purchased item
  • Issuing a full or partial refund
  • Monetary compensation
  • Additional items
  • Other goods and services not included in the original listing

If a buyer contacts a seller with a problem, the seller should make every effort to resolve the issue. Once the transaction is concluded, a seller may ask the buyer to leave positive Feedback or high detailed seller ratings, or request a revision of previous negative or neutral Feedback.

Make sure you follow these guidelines. If you don't, you may be subject to a range of actions, including limits of your buying and selling privileges and suspension of your account.

Please note that we can't accept reports of Feedback extortion received through email outside of eBay because these can be easily falsified. In order to protect you, we recommend you always use My eBay Messages to communicate with your sellers.

Examples of Feedback extortion:

The buyer can't threaten to leave negative Feedback or low detailed seller ratings if the seller won't:

  • Accept a return and pay for return postage if not covered by the listing or eBay Money Back Guarantee.
  • Give a full or partial refund for an item if not covered by the listing or eBay Money Back Guarantee.
  • Lower the postage and handling costs.
  • Refund payment before the buyer sends the item back to the seller.
  • Send an extra item that wasn't part of the original listing. (This doesn't include a situation where a buyer requests a replacement for an item that doesn't match the original item description.)

The seller can't:

  • Refuse to send the item or refund the buyer unless the buyer leaves positive Feedback or high detailed seller ratings.
  • Tell the buyer that they can't use a warranty included in the listing unless the buyer leaves positive Feedback or high detailed seller ratings.
  • Offer monetary compensation, like a partial refund, to the buyer in exchange for positive Feedback or revising negative or neutral Feedback.

Why does eBay have this policy?

Feedback is intended as a way to let our members share their experiences with other members. Using it as a way to force other members to do things they aren't obliged to do is a misuse of Feedback, and we don't allow it.
