Bathurst History"The Great Race" started in Bathurst as the Armstrong 500 in 1963. Originally a 500-mile race, this changed in 1973 with metrication. That was the year the then Hardie-Ferodo 500-mile race became the Hardie-Ferodo 1000-kilometre race, a length it has retained ever since. Throughout its history, its always been a race for street cars rather than ground-up racers. That vision has been only one of the things that have captured the Australian imagination.
King of the MountainThe name "King of the Mountain" applies to one man and one man only: Peter Brock. With no less than nine victories starting in 1972 and ending in 1987, he set a record that may never be surpassed, though his last victory was a fluke. He was third across the line, but both cars ahead of him were disqualified, handing him his final victory.
