Paying for items with a credit or debit card

You can pay for most items on eBay using a credit or debit card. You'll see the available payment methods on the listing and at checkout.

You can pay for most items on eBay with Visa or Mastercard. If you have any questions about paying for your items, you can always contact the seller.

How to pay with a credit or debit card

  1. Select Credit or debit card on the checkout page, and enter your card details. We'll secure your card and won't share your card details with the seller.
  2. If you'd like us to save the card details for your next purchase, select Remember this card for future orders.
  3. Review your order, including your delivery details.
  4. Select Confirm and pay.

Pending payment authorisations

When you place an order for items from different sellers on eBay, you may see duplicate pending charges appear in your credit card or bank account. Don't worry – this doesn't mean you'll be overcharged. These payment authorisations are not charges, and will typically be removed from your account within a week. In some cases, your bank may take up to 30 days to remove these authorisations.

Splitting payments between two cards

If you're making a purchase of $500 or more, you may see the option to split payments across two eligible debit or credit cards at checkout. Here's how:

  1. Select the toggle to Split payment between two cards.
  2. Select two cards to checkout.
  3. Enter an amount for the first card.
  4. The remaining amount will be charged to the second card.
  5. Select Save.
  6. Review your order, including your delivery details.
  7. Select Confirm and pay.

You'll need two credit or debit cards saved to your eBay account to split payments. To add a new card, simply select Add new card and enter the card details.

You can't use this feature with PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Zip or Afterpay at this time. Additionally, you can only split payments for purchases made in Australian dollars (AUD). If you paid for an item on eBay using two cards and are due a full refund, each card will be refunded the amount it was charged at checkout. If you receive a partial refund, the card that was charged the highest amount will be refunded first. Any additional amount will be refunded to the second card.

Problems paying with your card

If you have trouble paying with a credit or debit card, check the following:

  1. Your card details are correct. Make sure that all details, such as the card number, expiry date and CVV code are entered correctly, and check that the name and billing addresses are exactly as they appear on your card statement.
  2. Your card is not expired and has been activated. Your card will be declined if it is out of date. If you're using a new card for the first time, make sure it has been activated. If you're not sure how to activate your card, contact your card issuer.
  3. You have sufficient funds. If you don't have enough credit or funds to cover the cost of your order, your payment may be declined. Your payments may also be declined if you've reached your daily transaction limit.
  4. You need to update your browser. If you're using an older web browser that isn't secure enough for making payments or managing your payment methods, you'll need to update your browser before you can complete your purchase. See our article on technical issues for more information on keeping your browser up to date. If possible, you can also try completing your purchase on another device.

If these troubleshooting steps don't resolve your issue, try a different payment method or contact your card provider for further assistance.
