How to send a message on eBay
How you send a message to another eBay member will depend on whether you've already done business with them:
- If you'd like to contact someone you haven't had any transaction with before, you can select their username to go to their profile page and then select Contact
- If you've bid on, bought from, or sold to the member, you can contact them through My eBay:
- Find the item in your Purchases - opens in new window or tab, or in your Orders in Seller Hub - opens in new window or tab or My eBay - opens in new window or tab.
- Select the More actions dropdown menu and select Contact seller or Contact buyer.
- Type your message and select Send.
We'll send your message to the member's Messages inbox and their personal email address. You can choose to send a copy to your registered email address as well.
Tip
Sellers sometimes provide answers to commonly asked questions. If they have, we'll show you this information before you contact the seller.
Managing your eBay messages
In your Messages, you'll see all messages from the same buyer or seller grouped together in a threaded conversation.
Here's some tips for using Messages:
- Add images — Select the picture icon on desktop or the camera icon on the app to choose up to 5 images at a time
- Delete messages — On desktop, tick the box beside the message(s), then select the Trash icon
- For iOS, swipe left on the message you want to delete, or select Edit to delete multiple messages
- For Android, long press to select a message or multiple messages and then select Delete at the top
- Send offers — Select Send offer or Make an offer below the item information in the message screen for qualifying items
- Organise your inbox with custom folders — You can create up to 5 custom folders by selecting Create folder on desktop
Automatic response
If you're going to be away or won't have access to your Messages, you can turn on an automatic response. Here's how:
- Go to Time Away settings - opens in new window or tab.
- Select Automatic response.
- Select Message when on time away.
- Set a Start date and End date for your message.
- Type your message in the Automatic response box.
- Select Apply.
If someone contacts you through Messages during your time away period, they'll receive your automatic response message, along with the end date of your time away.
Tip
Remember, turning on your automatic response does not hide or pause your active listings; buyers will still be able to bid on and buy items from you as usual. If you want to pause sales, see our Time Away help page.
eBay AI-generated responses
Some sellers registered on eBay.com.au can opt in to use eBay.ai to help respond to buyer messages. We expect to make this available to more sellers soon.
Once you enable eBay.ai, it will suggest responses to questions from your buyers about item details or postage. Suggested responses are generated using information from your listings and order details. eBay.ai doesn't use information from the internet, and avoids questions about pricing or offers.
You can review the AI-generated suggestion and edit the message before it's sent to the buyer. Select Use, then make your changes. If you don't want to use the suggested response, simply select Dismiss.
To turn AI suggestions off, select the Settings icon at the top right of your Messages - opens in new window or tab inbox and use the toggle to disable eBay.ai for messages. You can re-enable AI responses at any time.
