It's free for Australia-based sellers with up to $25,000 in sales over the past 12 months to sell on eBay.com.au. This means eligible sellers won't pay transaction fees (final value fees) when items sell. Some fees may still apply based on your selling activity, such as when using optional listing upgrades or when an item is being delivered outside Australia. Note that as part of our free selling experience, you'll generally have to buy labels on eBay to send your items.
Different fees, including transaction fees, apply if:
- Fees which apply when Your registration address is outside Australia
- Fees which apply when You have an eBay Pro plan
- Fees which apply when You want to sell vehicles
- Fees which apply when You're selling on eBay Live
This page was updated on 15 June 2026 with updated fee terms for sellers who are not meeting seller performance requirements. From 1 August 2026, sellers who are evaluated as not meeting our requirements for four or more consecutive months will be charged a higher fee.
Most fees and other selling costs, such as postage costs for labels you buy on eBay and refunds to buyers, are deducted from your sales proceeds before the funds are paid out to you. Learn more about how fees and selling costs are charged.
Eligibility for free selling
To qualify for free selling on eBay.com.au, you need to:
- Have a registration address in Australia, and
- Sell without an eBay Pro plan, and
- Sell AU $25,000 or less on eBay in the past 12 months
Note that as part of our free selling experience, you'll generally have to buy labels on eBay to send your eligible items.
Each month, we calculate your total sales on eBay using data from the preceding 12 full calendar months. For example, the calculation in August is based on sales from the previous 1 August – 31 July. We add up your sales across all eBay sites, using the total amount of each sale (including the item price, postage and any applicable tax).
- If your total sales is over AU $25,000 and you don't have a Pro plan, we'll notify you on the 20th of the month before upgrading you to a Pro Starter plan from the 1st of the following month. The Pro Starter plan has no monthly cost, but you'll pay transaction fees (final value fees) when your items sell. Learn more about eBay Pro selling fees that will apply to you.

Tip
If your total sales is over AU $25,000, the Pro Starter plan operates as your default selling experience. The Pro Starter plan has no monthly cost. If you have a Pro Basic, Featured or Anchor plan, you can choose to move to the Pro Starter plan and the change takes effect from the 1st of the following month.

If your registered address is in Australia, we charge an international sales fee of 3% (incl. GST) if the delivery address for the item (entered by the buyer during checkout) is outside Australia.
This fee is calculated on the total amount of the sale and is automatically deducted from your sales proceeds. The total amount of the sale includes the item price, postage and handling charges, and any tax or other applicable fees.
If you don't want international buyers to purchase your items, you can learn how to exclude international delivery locations in our International selling policy.
Fees for not meeting seller performance requirements
Fees will apply to your sales in the following circumstances:
- When your seller performance is evaluated as Below Standard: If your seller evaluation on the 20th of a month shows that you are not meeting our minimum performance standards, you'll be charged a fee of 5.5% (incl. GST) on the total sale amount for items sold in all categories during the following calendar month
- If your account has been evaluated as Below Standard for four or more consecutive months, this fee will increase to 6.6% (incl. GST) until your seller level improves
- When your rate of 'Item not as described' returns is Very High: If your service metrics evaluation on the 20th of a month indicates that your rate of 'Item not as described' returns is Very High in one or more categories compared to your peers, you'll be charged a fee of 5.5% (incl. GST) on the total sale amount for items sold in those categories during the following calendar month
- If a particular rate has been evaluated as Very High for four or more consecutive months, this fee will increase to 6.6% (incl. GST) until your rate improves
These fees are calculated on the total amount of the sale and are automatically deducted from your sales proceeds. The total amount of the sale includes the item price, postage and handling charges, and any tax or other applicable fees. We'll indicate which listings are subject to an additional fee on your Seller account - opens in new window or tab.
You can review your performance metrics and status at any time in your Seller standards dashboard and Service metrics dashboard.
Note: If your account is Below Standard and you're rated Very High in your rate of 'Item not as described' return requests, you'll only be charged the applicable fee for Below Standard.

Dispute fees
If you're found responsible for a chargeback or other disputed amount as per our policies, we charge a dispute fee of $24.20 (incl. GST) for each dispute.
Seller currency conversion charge
When you create listings or sell items on an international eBay site, eBay may convert your funds to a different currency in order to collect amounts owed by you to eBay, or to payout funds due to you.
For example, if your registered address is in Australia and you create a listing on eBay.de for which fees are due (such as insertion and/or optional listing upgrade fees), eBay will convert your funds from AUD to EUR using the transaction exchange rate applicable at the time of listing, in order to collect these fees. When the item sells on eBay.de, eBay will calculate your payout amount by converting the sales proceeds from EUR to AUD using the transaction exchange rate applicable at the time of the sale.
If eBay converts your funds, the conversion will be completed at the transaction exchange rate we set for the relevant currency exchange. eBay's transaction exchange rate is composed of a base exchange rate plus a conversion charge. The conversion charge is a fixed percentage applied to the base exchange rate and retained by eBay. The base exchange rate reflects rates within the wholesale currency markets applicable to the currency pairing on the day of the conversion, or the prior business day. If exchange rates are set by law or regulation, the base exchange rate reflects the government reference rates.
If your registered address is in Australia, the seller currency conversion charge applied and retained by eBay is 3%. If your registered address is not in Australia, please refer to the fee page for your country or region of residence for your seller currency conversion charge information.
Fees for sellers residing outside Australia
In addition to the dispute fees and seller currency conversion charges detailed above, the following fees apply to sellers whose registration address is outside Australia and who don't have an eBay Pro subscription.
Different fees apply when listing in Vehicle categories.
