A new chapter for selling on eBay Australia

A note from Sarah Sternau, Managing Director of eBay Australia

Today is a significant moment for eBay in Australia, designed to better support everyone who uses the platform to buy, sell, or grow a business. We’re introducing free selling for casual sellers, enhanced buyer protections, and updates to our selling subscriptions.

This isn’t just a change, it’s an investment in the future of our marketplace in Australia. One that opens the door for more Aussies to sell and supports businesses of all sizes to grow, creating stronger and more vibrant eBay.

Thank you to our incredible community for embracing this change with us. We know it takes time to adjust, so please keep sharing your feedback with us so we can continue to support you. I’m excited for the opportunities this unlocks in our community.

It’s never been a better time to start selling on eBay

We want selling on ebay to be simple and easy, and we know fees are one of the biggest barriers for everyday Aussies to start selling on eBay. I’m excited to announce that from today, Australian-based sellers with up to $25,000 in sales annually will no longer pay transaction fees when they sell on ebay.com.au.

If you’ve been thinking about selling items around your house you no longer need, or selling on eBay as a hobby, then it’s never been easier to get started!

Sellers will be able to choose how they want to sell on eBay*

If you sell less than $25,000 annually, you can choose free selling or a Pro subscription, depending on what features and flexibility you need. If you use advanced selling features or want to grow and scale on eBay, we believe one of our Pro subscriptions will be the best fit. The choice is yours. Subscriptions renew monthly, and you can upgrade or change your plan over time, with updates taking effect from the next billing cycle.

We’re building trust with every transaction

We not only want eBay to be the easiest selling platform, but the most trusted. All eBay users will benefit from new 24/7 customer support, so you can use our online chat to get support from a real person at any time of the day. We've got you covered with our protections whether you buy or sell on eBay.

To support these protections, a buyer fee of 4-8% will be added when buying from a seller without a Pro Plan. As a buyer, you will see an all-in price when shopping on eBay, so no surprises or unexpected fees at checkout. If you are a seller on a Pro Plan, your buyers benefit from these increased protections at no extra cost. You will also have access to new 24/7 customer support, as we know your store is always open on eBay.

Sending your eBay orders is simple

If you choose to take advantage of free selling, you’ll need to buy labels on eBay to send your items. You’ll be able to buy Australia Post labels on eBay at discounted rates and drop your orders off at the post office. We’ve also recently launched a printer-free option that will generate a QR code that you can show at the post office, and they will print the label for you.

Tracking is also automatically uploaded, so buyers get updates along the delivery journey, and you’re protected if anything goes wrong in transit.

This might not be a fit for every order, so there are exceptions if you are sending an item under $20, one that fits in an envelope or is heavy or bulky. If you would like flexibility to choose your postage providers, you can upgrade to an eBay Pro Plan

What this change means for our Pro Sellers

Our Pro sellers are an integral part of our marketplace, and part of this evolution is continuing to drive value and velocity for those that trust us with their business. We know scaling your business is your key focus, so these changes are aimed at:

  • Reinforcing the value of your Pro Plan
We value the investment you’ve made in running your business on eBay, so advanced selling tools and features such as multi-quantity listings and volume pricing are now exclusive to our Pro subscriptions. This means you can be confident you have the tools you need to scale and to run your business your way.

  • Driving more buyers for your business
By making eBay the easiest and most trusted platform, we attract more casual sellers. Casual sellers spend 3x more on average on eBay compared to buyers who don’t sell, and 75% of their purchases are from business Pro sellers**.

To our eBay community

I’m always amazed by the diversity of our eBay community, so I’m excited to see what this change means for all of you, no matter how you use eBay. This year has been about driving innovation at eBay, including introducing free selling and eBay Live, which create new ways for people to engage with and use eBay.

The core of our business is about creating economic opportunity, and I feel excited looking ahead as we continue to drive success for our many diverse sellers.

Thanks to you all for being part of our community.
