More information on the recent selling updates
We've heard your feedback and wanted to share more information to clarify the changes and what they mean for you.
We recently announced some changes to selling on eBay.com.au, including free selling for casual sellers and updates to our seller subscriptions.
Part of launching these changes is working closely with our community and listening to their questions and feedback. We’ve heard you, and wanted to share more information to clarify the changes and what they mean for you.

The new Buyer Protection fee and pricing your items
As part of these changes to strengthen our marketplace, we're introducing Buyer Protection to give your buyers even more peace of mind when shopping on eBay.
With Buyer Protection, buyers will get access to new 24/7 customer support, risk monitoring and fraud detection, and secure transactions. A Buyer Protection fee will be added to listings from Australia-based sellers who don't have a Pro plan. For Pro sellers, Buyer Protection is included in your listings at no additional cost to you or your buyer.
- The Buyer Protection fee is not a flat fee
The Buyer Protection fee is not a flat 8%. It’s a tiered percentage fee that gets cheaper as the price increases, plus a small fixed fee. It starts at 8% for the first $20, then drops to 6% up to $500, and 4% beyond that, plus a flat $0.30 flat fee per item. Learn more about how it's calculated. - You’ll see the full price a buyer will pay before you list your items
When you create a listing, we’ll show you the total price a buyer will see, including the Buyer Protection fee. This helps you price your item with confidence from the start. Sellers without a Pro plan may want to revise item prices on existing listings when Buyer Protection is introduced. - No surprise fees for buyers at checkout
Buyers will see an all-in price as they browse on eBay. That means no unexpected fees added at checkout, which helps build trust and reduce friction. They will see the total cost broken down on the checkout page before they purchase. - Only items from sellers without a Pro plan will have the Buyer Protection fee added
Pro sellers won’t have the Buyer Protection fee added to their listings, Buyer Protection will be included at no additional cost.
Examples of how we calculate the Buyer Protection fee
Item price set by seller Buyer Protection fee Price that buyer sees Seller earnings* $10 $1.10
(8% of $10 + $0.30)
$11.10 + postage $10 $38 $2.98
(8% of $20+ 6% of $18 + $0.30)
$40.98 + postage $38 $2,500 $110.70
(8% of $20, + 6% of $480, + 4% of $2,000, + $0.30)
$2,610.70 + postage $2,500
When a buyer makes an offer on a listing from an Australia-based seller without a Pro plan:
Buyer offer price $430 (includes Buyer Protection fee of $25)Offer price that seller sees $405 + postage Seller earnings* $405 *Actual earnings may differ: for example, if the seller promotes the listing or if the item delivery address is outside Australia.
Buying labels on eBay
To simplify shipping and provide a consistent, tracked and protected experience, sellers without a Pro plan will generally need to buy a label on eBay to post their items. We’ve seen a lot of questions about how this works and what it costs, so here’s what you need to know.
- You still have access to Australia Post when you buy a label on eBay
Buying labels on eBay doesn’t change your access to Australia Post. You can purchase AusPost labels on eBay and drop off your parcels at the post office, just like you do now. In fact, our postage rates for Australia Post are cheaper than retail rates, so many sellers will actually save on postage when they buy labels on eBay. See Australia Post discounted rates available on eBay.
If you have a MyPost Business account and have a higher savings band than the Band 2 level discounts available via eBay, it may be cheaper to send directly through Australia Post. To send with your preferred carrier, you can upgrade to an eBay Pro plan. With a Pro plan you can choose how to send items, either by buying labels on eBay or through your carrier of choice. - You don’t need to buy labels on eBay for low-value, light-weight or bulky items
We know one size doesn’t fit all. There are exceptions in place for items that are under $20, fit in an envelope, or are heavy (over 22kgs) or bulky (over 104cm in length). You’ll still have flexibility on how you send these items, regardless if you are on a Pro plan or not. When you list your items, you’ll see whether you’re required to buy a label on eBay or not. Learn more about buying shipping labels on eBay. - You don’t need a printer when you buy labels on eBay
If you don’t have a printer, that’s okay. We’re introducing printer-free options in the coming weeks which will generate a QR code that you can show at the post office and they will print and attach the label for you. - Using your prepaid satchels
We understand that some sellers have purchased prepaid satchels in bulk for sending orders. You can continue using these prepaid satchels to send orders until 1 June 2026.
From this date, if you are eligible and choose to remain in the free selling experience, you may still be able to use your satchels for low-value or light-weight items that are exempt from labels on eBay. Sellers on a Pro Plan can always choose how they send their items, including using prepaid satchels. - Cost of labels on eBay
We partner with Australia Post to offer discounted label rates compared to standard retail pricing, with savings of up to 25% on selected services.
We’ve heard there are some concerns about label costs for sending lightweight items on eBay. We’ve reviewed and updated our rates for items under 1kg to ensure you’re saving on postage when you send these items with eBay.
We are working on adding more carriers and differentiated delivery options to eBay so you can access convenient, tracked shipping at competitive rates. - Additional protections when you buy labels on eBay
When you buy a label on eBay, tracking is uploaded automatically, which means buyers can see every step of the delivery journey and you'll benefit from additional seller protections. For orders up to $750 sent with a label purchased on eBay, we'll take care of any claims if the item hasn't arrived. We'll automatically respond to the buyer and you won't be responsible for providing a refund.
Choosing the right selling plan
With these changes, you might be wondering which selling plan is right for you. You could be eligible for free selling or considering which Pro plan is right for you. Ultimately it depends on how much you sell and which features you need access to.
- Consider your sales volume
If you sell over $25,000 in a rolling 12-month period, you’ll be automatically upgraded to a Pro Starter plan as your default selling experience. This plan has no monthly cost but you’ll pay a final value fee when your item sells. If you sell high volumes, you can upgrade to a Pro Basic plan or above, which unlocks lower final value fees as well as additional features compared to the Pro Starter plan, but you’ll pay a monthly subscription fee. - Think about postage and payment options
With free selling, your payouts will only be available on-demand and you will generally need to buy labels on eBay to send eligible items. If you want to choose your postage carrier or schedule your payouts, you should consider upgrading to an eBay Pro plan. - Consider which selling features you need
You may also choose which Pro plan makes sense for you based on the tools and features you need access to.
If you want access to create multi-quantity listings or listings with variations to showcase your items, you’ll need to choose one of our Pro plans.
If you want access to our seller marketing tools like volume pricing discounts and seller coupons or you need access to third-party integrations or API tools, you’ll need to subscribe to a Pro Basic plan or higher.
You can upgrade and downgrade your Pro plans at any time. However, you can only cancel your subscription if you have $25,000 or less sales in the past 12 months. Learn more about selling fees and how your sales are evaluated
What’s next
You don’t need to do anything right now. We’ll confirm your eligibility for free selling or where you sit in the new Pro plans on 12 May. If you are eligible for free selling, you'll have the option to cancel your current subscription or opt out of Pro Starter to take advantage of free selling.
These changes are designed to make selling simpler and better value for all sellers on eBay; whether you’re listing a few items or running a growing business.
We know change can take time to adjust to. We’ll keep listening to your feedback and sharing updates in the community as needed.
We appreciate all your feedback, and if you have questions, we’re here to help.
