Still a very capable high quality camera

If you need a decent camera for sports, then choose one of these before an entry level new model. Megapixel seems low but quality of images are absolutely excellent when coupled with a decent enough lens - for example the VR 55-300 Nikon.

Shutter counts seem to be the main deciding factor when people purchase a camera but I have NEVER had a shutter failure on one of these high end Nikon’s. Nowadays, shutters are made with planned obsolescence so that they are doomed to fail. It is a marketing ploy in order for consumers to buy new cameras as they get produced. Nothing more. These cameras do not suffer this problem generally.

All in all, I would highly recommend one of these models.

Get a good one, add two new batteries and a good lens, it's a winner.

First I'll explain the scores, overall for my intended use it's GOOD. Picture quality is a combination, low pixel count compared with the latest bodies is LOW, so it has to be below average, but with good glass accurately exposed it's fine for my use.
Features however could be good, IF you need to use them, but too many toy's and it's becomes confusing, so average will do. Size/weight, EXCELLENT, ok it IS heavy, its a Pro body, not a toy, the balance and weight are an advantage, don't want the weight, buy a plastic fantastic. VFM, GOOD, it's not cheap and in good condition still sought after by those who need 8 FPS (sports aren't the only use) and to get a result.

OK, now I'll tell you why I bought one, my D1H and D1x batteries are awful, treat them right and they will do a hundred or so shots, fine if you carry enough spares... So with the D2H I get a better battery 250 plus shots in a smaller lighter package, a higher FPS, more pixels (D1H has less, D1X only has a few more, and a much slower FPS) and more metering tweaks. It meter's with Ai'd MF glass, has more AF points, and handle's nicely too.

Nikon D2H

The description of the product is honest, only one fact that it is miss to mention the 4 missing screws. Otherwise it works very well and the shutter count is low.
The seller insist not to send the camera outside UK casue me a bit
of time and more work. But, understandnable. I quite like the D2H for its speed and lower pixel count. The price is really attractive. The Nikon Centre in Hong Kong managed to repair the mirror foam and add back 4 missing screws for me for less than GBP20.

Nikon D2H

What can you say despite being over 5 years old this is still a bench mark camera?
Speed and quality just what is wanted.
At 7 FPS this camera rocks.
With comprehensive battery information and Dust off setting the chances of unsellable or missed photos are just down to the user.
Lay out of the controls seems to have been planed after listening to photographers and not car / cloths designers.
I have rather large hands and found this the first camera (Apart from the Nikon F4) in over 40 years I could pick up and use instinctively with out feeling aware of its shape or performance.
(I normally need to tape or bulk out grips and buttons to get easy accesses)

The CSM menu is easy to understand and use, as are the play back, shooting and setup menus.
Focus with the newer Nikon Lens is fast amazingly quite and spot on, the older lens tend to make a few odd noises and hunt a bit.
I have never used Non OEM lens so can’t comment on this subject.

Drawbacks are that shooting in Black& white is not easy sadly B&W is a media that is now becoming rare due to DSLR cameras being the stranded.
Battery life is not fantastic and the Standby/ off mode drains batteries despite claims to the country.
Replacement OEM batteries are not cheap and for some reason Nikon now sell the battery cover as a separate item claiming that now you can use the cover on multiple batteries??
So I now pay for the battery and cover and it’s a blessing?
Non OEM batteries are easy to obtain and function almost as well I have had varying degrees of satisfaction with Non OEM batteries ranging from bad fitting to just plain crazy charging behaviour.
The habit of “jumping” from one focus filed to one you don’t want is always a pain with any modern Auto Focus camera. Sadly DSLR, are more prone to this.

But in the entire Camera is what you would want from Nikon.
Quality with a massive Q.
I used mine on what must have been the wettest day ever, shot over 500 images and not one was affected by water or bad light the metering just worked its way around it.
The camera is aimed at the sports end of the pro market but still performs well in any situation.
Admittedly it has been overtaken in many ways by the Nikon D3 X /H.
But for the price they can be had for (around £400 in good condition) they represent a robust and quality camera.
The mega pixel rate is low by today’s strandeds but ask any pro and they will tell you its not how many pixels’ but how large they are.
For my money this camera is the one to pay the extra for the D£ is just not defendable.
