An engaging but flawed film

To many film historians Johnny Guitar is a great film. There is much about that is engaging: dramatically photographed, dynamic performances and a story that is compelling and fast moving. The element that brings it back to earth is the choice of Joan Crawford as star. Crawford's one mode as an actress (too much ) is very much on display here. Her on screen sexuality is of the black widow kind and it's difficult to understand why two much younger men want her. The wardrobe department don't help in the credibility of the performance. Wet and disheveled she comes to an outlaws den and requests dry clothes. Fortunately there is a bright yellow, designer blouse with a particularly famine cut and a red scarf to go with it. Her next request is to ask if there are any eggs.( there are, as the outlaws had just been to the supermarket).
However you will no doubt stay with this one with it's many unexpected twists, and a beautifully sustained long scene as the various alliances and power confrontations are sorted out. The supporting cast is uniformly good.
