Tecsun PL-398MP radio is a fine little radio for the price.

Tecsun PL-398MP digital radio alarm clock has good reception and a great tuning dial that respects off the point tuning, meaning it actually fine tunes digital radio whereas other digital radios have no sound from a station once off the exact call/station numbers.
It's a bit difficult to set up with some small buttons used for more than one option. Setting the time is in military units but changes back to 12 hour when set. Has a sleep function for the radio which is nice.
Does not come with an AC/DC wall charger. I had to find and buy one that had the proper voltage and amps. Not an easy chore.
Search for an AC/DC power adapter for the radio name and model number for the easiest answer.
Uses 3 AA batteries and if you use NiMH rechargeables it keeps them charged as long as you have found and bought a power adapter to plug in. Don't use alkaline or lead acid batteries to recharge.

Nice, long antenna, alarm, stereo that can be turned to mono for better sound on distant stations. Sound quality is as expected for speakers this size in a cabinet this size, but fine for pre-sleep, emergency and general listening of news, talk and music. Can use a flash drive card for MP3. I've not tried that yet. Has short wave radio reception too for those lonely times in a nuclear winter. ; )~

This is a nice radio that has very good reception and a better tuning dial than any other radio I've tried but haven't tried another short wave type radio.

I would buy again, but the company really needs to supply a wallwart/power adapter to get full use of this little gem. I would look at other similar radios that have the power adapter and consider them first.

Very Good AM and FM radio! Easy to use

The only improvement, would be for the radio to show the call letters of the FM stations, and have recording capability, although it can play mp3 on SD cards inserted in the back of it already. Great stereo..excellent reception from far distances. Digital tuning. Auto tuning for all stations in one-shot, like a cable TV digital recorder. Has audio input, for listening to a mini mp3 player, I guess. I have't tried the shortwave yet. Big advantage; it takes AA batteries, vs. Nokia batteries that don't last. At least this way, it's easy to use 24/7 to use rechargeable AA's and either charge them inside this radio, or outside of the radio on an independent AA charger, over night. A keeper.Read full review...

Small with Big SOUND

Given the size of this radio/MP3 player the sound is brilliant. Place it next to a wall in a normal sized room and the clarity is great. Even when turned up high I have not experienced clipping or reverberations. Don't expect big stereo system sound, but I have not heard anything that is this small size sound as good before. The radio is great for AM and FM, easily tuned and the presets can be numbered how you like them. For Australia the SW bands are pretty useless; I could not tune in to anything that was listenable. For FM and SW there is a jack for an external antenna, however I have not tried that. The MP3 player is easy to use, the only downside is that the controls are on the back and it does not support (m3u) playlists, It uses 3x AA batteries. Battery life seems pretty good, and the display has a battery charge indicator which can be set to adjust for Ni-Mh batteries so you have a good idea of how much charge is left if using this type of battery. There is an option to charge rechargeable batteries in situ via USB cable from a PC, although I would expect most people would use an external charger and have a spare set ready to go rather than wait for hours charging via this method. Personally I would have preferred to have a DC in jack so an external power adapter (plug-pack) could be connected to provide power when the device is used indoors. Overall, this is a well designed, quality product at an affordable price. I will be watching to see if Tecsun introduces MP3 playlist support in a future modelRead full review...

A good radio, especially useful at night...

This radio was a replacement for one that I literally wore out - the tuning knob got loose after years of extreme use. I love this radio - the reception is better than one would expect from some other reviews, the alarm clock actually works, the ETM function is useful for tuning SW stations at different times of day, and the best thing about this radio is that the entire front of the radio ( every button! ) lights up so that you can play with it in the dark. The mp3 player is a nice bonus, and I listen to the radio in bed almost every night because it is perfect for night listening with its solid reception on all bands plus the wonderfully lit controls. Unexpected joy from an under-priced little radio (don't let the sellers know that).

Lots to learn, but the little radio has many surprising features. I've only had it a couple weeks but I'm learning several new things about it every day! Hook up a long wire antenna and you get more stations to listen to than you have time. And the little radio is really thrifty on battery consumption, too. Incredible little thing.Read full review...

The best AM receiver I've seen at any price.

I have a lot of expensive AM receivers and this one out receives them all. The band switch steps 1KC, 2 KC, 3 KC, 4 KC, 5 KC, & 6 KC CAN lock on THE MOST faint signals. SW is AM only -- no ssb but, the short wave band work as good as the M/W band.
Worth twice as much.
Works better on batteries. Seems to lose some sensitivity when using a AC power supply.
