Primitive but classic

This is a great, great game. The graphics are obviously primitive compared to later versions of the game, but it is a lot of fun to play and has numerous improvements from the earlier version. Once you get the timing down it becomes easy to score, but shootouts are a lot more fun than 1-0 games, right? There is internal memory, so you can save playoff trees forever and never have to worry about replacing a battery on the inside. One fun/funny aspect, is if you knock a player out in a fight, a spurt of blood comes out of their head and they stagger and wobble back to the bench. Primitive? Yes. Fun? You better believe it!Read full review...

To heck with graphics.

This game is just plain fun. I’ve wasted so many late drunken nights playing this game with my buddies. HOUSE GROUND RULES: Teams are picked in a “blind roulette” fashion and the defense must become goalie when opponent is in their offensive zone. 5 minute periods. Fairly realistic scoring.Read full review...

NHL 94 Megadrive/ Genesis - a timeless great

This is still one of the best, if not the best, video game ice hockey simulations at the time of writing (January 2012). The one problem with this is that the violence was taken out by omitting blood from head injuries and the fights (that were present in the previous version). However, the fights could be a factor in breaking up gameplay in the 1993 game and their omission is seen by many as a plus for this reason.
I have played the SNES version and feel that this MD version is better as the controls seem more fluid, as seems the gameplay.
I have played in leagues with this over the years and once people start playing it can take over their lives if there is a competitive atmosphere present such as a league.
There is a version of this in PS2 NHL 06 and it also can be played in 60Hz mode on PC by downloading an emulator via NHL.com.

I have been playing on and off on this for about 15 years and its still great, even though many will mock the now basic graphics. The artificial intelligence of the teams remains second to none, as does a face to face battle when the selected teams balance individual abilities.

Buy it and try it - you won't be disappointed.

Blast From My Past

I used to play this game when I was much younger. I was given the new min system and decided to get the only game I ever really played. The game was in very good shape, especially for it's age. It plays fine and thank you!Read full review...

A true classic

When nhl 94 people were expecting some great, but no one knew how great it would turn out to be. It's the first hockey game to have one timers, real players and teams names, it also had cool card stats that showed how many goals and assists you got with any player in the game during one game. I would try beat my record, I beleive it was with Pierrre Turgeon I scored 11 goals in a 5 minutes game...awww good times.

I sold it years ago, but always regreted it so I rebought it on ebay!

Do NOT buy this. Be a man and get SNES version.

In my opinion this game is downright offensive. The fact that people consider this an "official" NHL game is outrageous. In my mind it's nothing more than a cheap knockoff of the greatest sports game ever made.

The dark Teal colored ice makes me sick to my stomach. The distorted sound hurts my ears. The penguins are hardly the dynasty on the Genesis that we all know they are on SNES.

Let's put it this way:

Genesis NHL '94 = Mario 2
SNES NHL '94 = Mario 3

You show me Mario "The Goose" Gosselin make a game saving stack of the pads to win the cup for the Whalers on the Genesis. go ahead let's see it? .........

That's what I though.

Seriously, every minute you play this garbage is a waste of your life. Are you really that impressed by a little blood? Show some class and get the SNES version of this classic game. The pleasing light blue ice alone is worth the investment.

The one star is only based on the hypothetical scenario that I was barricaded in North Korea where SNES is outlawed and forced to either die alone and bored or settle for Genesis. In that, and only that, circumstance I would allow my self to settle for the Genesis version of the game I've devoted my life to mastering.

NHL '94 you are the best!

When NHL 94 came out back in 1993 it was one of, if not THE best sports games.
This was the first game to have all the NHL teams and NHL Players. Penalty shots, expansion teams, manual and most importantly; one-timers we all in NHL 94.

At the time the graphics, animations, local organ music, gameplay and speed were all top-notch. It was the most realistic console hockey game, yet it appealed to people who could care less about playing or watch real-life hockey. Who can not love flying down on the goalie with Roenick doing a backhand-to-forehand topshelf deke, or cutting across and having Ray Bourque unleash a slapshot, or Jagr feeding Mario a one-timer?

There's a reason it's been voted "All-Time Greatest Sports Video Game" and people are still playing it well over a decade late; the game is simply fun and intense.

NHL 94 Sega Genesis

The GOAT on the hockey genre and arguably the GOAT in video game sports. Legendary advances in gameplay and a game that was light years ahead of it's time with Ron Barr doing pregame commentary, instant replay, STATS SAVED by a user name, and around the league highlights during breaks. I repeaf, this was in 1994 on a Sega Genesis cart!!! Simply the best, better than all the rest. Or to keep it in the realm of Canadien praise "The best there is, the best there was, the best there ever will be!" NHL 94 is a must have an juggernaut classic game.

Why I love this game!

NHL 94 is one of my all time favorite games. 10 or 12 years ago it kept a bunch of us crazy college kids up till the wee hours of the morning, trying to be the best among our friends. It also kept us from attending some classes, and probably going out and possibly hooking up with hot college girls. No regrets though. At present I still play it with a few select friends who share the passion for the game. Good thing we somehow managed to get stable jobs, and loving girlfriends...Read full review...
