Entertaining and important. A true cinematic gem.

The last time that I saw this film was via an old and scratchy VHS. I remember feeling disappointed that the film did not do justice to the book. BUT ... seeing the film again, via a lovely clean and crisp DVD I have had to change my mind. I can think of a very small handful of films which effectively challenge societal attitudes. Gentlemen's Agreement (1947) and Victim (1961) are two that spring readily to mind. To Kill a Mockingbird also challenges what was, unfortunately, ingrained racism. It does so with dignity and by asking the viewer to draw the correct conclusion rather than by overt statements. It left me with a hope for the future, especially in these days of "Black Lives Matter". It would be a far better world if homophobia, antisemitism and racism were things of the past.

I cannot think of a better cast for this film. The children, especially, were real children rather than just actors. Whenever I re-read the novel (which I do), I see these young people. They ARE Scout, Jem and Dill. And Gregory Peck truly was Atticus. I read that Mary Badham continued to call him Atticus ever afterwards. Their relationship in the film was one of respect and trust. It had to have been real. Much has been said and written about Gregory Peck's performance, and he truly deserved that Oscar.

To Kill a Mockingbird is a classic. It's Hollywood at its best. It has something to say which is relevant today. It's not only excellent entertainment, it's also important. It makes the viewer think about the world in which they live and their own attitudes to it.

The photos that I've included are from behind the scenes or from the airport before the Oscar ceremonies.

A classic movie for all time

A moving movie of the book "To Kill a Mockingbird" that faithfully follows the story and brings the characters to life. In B&W and, by today's standards, quite simple in its production. Gregory Peck is superb in the role of Atticus Finch. A classic movie worth re-visiting.Read full review...
