Quiet alternative

I prefer Shimano components. I bought a new, 2016 Stumpjumper carbon frameset that comes spec'd with a PF30 bottom bracket shell. I've tried to avoid press-fit BB's due to the too-common issue of noise developing related to the BB being pressed in as opposed to threaded. This idea from Wheels Mfg was a nice work around. In addition, the bearings that accept the 24mm Shimano crank spindle sit external to the BB shell and come already pressed into the threaded Wheels inserts. Thus there's no pressing in a PF30 shell then pressing in and adapter to finally thread in a Shimano BB. This is a one step deal where the left and right sides with bearings already installed in correct external position, thread together, pressing itself into the PF30 shell. With the seals installed, the diameter (overall width, in other words) of this bottom bracket is equivalent to the width of a Shimano external bearing bottom bracket installed in 73mm BSA threaded shell which requires one, 2.5mm, spacer between the drive side cup and frame's BB. Essentially, the Wheels BB is a very quick, easy installation with a Shimano compatible BB tool and grease.
So far the performance is good. No noises from the area have been noted. The bearings spin smoothly and the XTR crankset I've installed performs as expected. The sealed bearings can be serviced or replaced with the use of a bearing press tool. Overall, I give the Wheels Mfg thread together PF30 to 24mm BB a 4/5. I feel the price, approximately 3x that of an XT level Shimano external BB, to be a bit excessive, however it's a great idea and if it keeps the press fit BB area quiet long-term, it'll be priceless.Read full review...
