My favorite string.

Where to begin with these?

The price? Very reasonable for flats.

The quality? D'Adario makes these so it's as good as it gets really.

The sound? Glorious. These things have a bit of growl, plenty of punch, and are quite round for flats. However they still have the huge fundemental of flats. I have used Chromes, these are totally different and way better. For the record I don't like Chromes; these are my favorite string.

It's hard to really place them, I'd say they walk a nice balance between a modern string like the EB Cobalts (which sound thinner and almost plasticy on the high end but are undeniably very roundwound like) and LaBellas which I'd call a more thumpy string.

All that said I've only used EB Cobalts, LaBella, and 9050MLs for about 3 months. None of them have had major sound changes, though my LaBellas are dealing with a really bad nut on my Jazz bass that's effected the balance of their sound.

And finally the feel? Yup. They feel like flats. Perhaps a bit sticky at first but that wears off and then it's just real nice, smooth wire. Tension is perfectly fine, I prefer higher tension strings and find these adequate but wouldn't complain with a bit more.

So really in the end I guess I'm saying if you want a great string that gives all the brightness you'd ever need in a band but without all that awful string noise and flab of rounds get these. If you want to get funky they will, but if you're into that huge thump LaBellas are where you need to look.

Great Sounding Strings

My Fender Jazz Bass loves these strings. They give me that John Paul Jones thump and growl .

The sound quality is outstanding and they last a lot longer than round wounds. I play rounds on my Rickenbacker. Between the two basses and the kind of strings on each, I can play high end punchy cut through the noise bass right down to fill the room with bottom bass.

I have tried many types of strings on my Fender and will never use anything else again.

A flatwound winner!

I haven't found anything that measures up to D'addario EXL 170's on my G&l LB 100 bass but wanted a flatwound strung instrument . My other bass, a Yamaha TRBX 304 has some nasal qualities that are hard to tame. The EXLs it came with don't suit it. Neither did GHS Precision flats or GHS Pressurewounds but these are a revelation. Smooth sounding with good depth and midrange presence, no nasalness though. Intonation is fine too. I understand these are manufactured for Fender by D'addario so I'd expect good intonation. Matching strings up to basses is something of a crap shoot so these may work or not on your bass but they are worth a try. Tension too, as far as I can measure, is just under 200 lbs. so no real worry about bending a neck. Try them!Read full review...

Old School....

I'm an old school bass player that appreciates the fat sound you get from flatwound strings. Genuine Country! These medium lights are easy on the fingers. Great strings!
