Obcura, the pinnacle of death metal

Obscura is the Finnegan’s Wake of metal. Incomprehensible and chaotic at first, but with some patience and (real) listening, this is easily the greatest work of technical death metal every produced. Obscura isn’t merely guitar and bass riffs with drums and screams thrown in, but a musical soundscape that involves using each instrument in a unique way. From the screeching guitars that intermingle within the opening of the title track to its “stroboscope” style riff later on, the listener will shortly come to the realization this isn’t your average death metal album. Other noteworthy sections include the use of the viola in “Earthly Love” that creates one of the most gloomy and haunting effects on the album, as well as the accessible melody to “Nostalgia” which shows a blend of the band’s ability to combine a chaotic rhythm with a - dare I say - beautiful melody.

Obscura is a must listen for any serious music lover or death metal head. It might not stick for everyone, but it will continue to find devoted listeners.
